RAY JORDAN WINE GUIDE 2017

Gralyn Estate Reserve chardonnay 2015 ($75)

A beautiful wine that strikes a balance between a linear modern style and the traditional power of Margaret River. IT harnesses things so superbly. Minerally nectarine, white peach and wild yeast infused cashew characters. The palate is brilliantly linear but with a driving intensity. Some nice smoky characters on the finish.

Score: 94/10       Cellar: 6 years

Gralyn Estate Reserve shiraz 2012 ($120)

One of the more elegant wines from Gralyn with structure and fruit intensity that is controlled and most elegant. IT’s medium to full bodied with a deep and powerful intensity, delivered with those powdery tannins and fine grained oak holding it all together. Lifted cedar notes with a leaf tobacco character enhance the scented perfumes.

Score: 95/100     Cellar: 12 years

Gralyn Estate Reserve cabernet sauvignon 2012 ($120)

Supremely elegant and stylish expression of Wilyabrup cabernet. There is a steely thread running through the palate with hints of graphite and ironstone that gives it such structure. But the supple fruit is the key. Perfumed blackcurrant and a hint of violet and cedar oak. Lovely poise and refinement on the palate. Great cellaring potential.

Score: 97/100     Cellar: 15 years

Gralyn Estate Chocolate Ruby Fortified ($55)

Interesting to say the least. It’s fortified cabernet sauvignon infused with chocolate. The result is rather good. Blackberry and chocolate aromas and palate are dominant. Has a slightly confectionary character. Nice wine for the winter with …chocolate of all things.

Score: 88/100     Cellar: 15 years

Gralyn Estate Museum Muscat ($150/375ml)

A beautiful old muscat showing all those wonderful rancio character. It gets extended time to mature in old oak casks where it develops complexity of extraordinary depth. Luscious and unctuous with overtones of toffee and dark chocolate. The palate is really alive and vibrant despite its obvious age.

Score: 94/100     Cellar: Indefinitely.

 RAY JORDAN WINE GUIDE 2016

Gralyn Estate Vintage Fortified 2014 ($65)

Gralyn was always known for its fortifieds from its earliest days and great to see they are still making them. This is a vintage wine displaying such complex dark plum and mulberry fruit with a liberal splash of spices and licorice. The palate is smooth and integrated with fine tannins and excellent use of spirits in the fortification. Lovely expression of the style.

SCORE 94/100 CELLAR 20 years

Gralyn Estate Reserve chardonnay 2014 ($75)

Another impressive chardonnay from a producer best known for its red wines. Fine and delicately poised with minerally savoury characters adding deep complexity through the melony light white peach fruit characters. Indigenous yeasts have contributed to the palate texture and character. An attractive modern style of chardonnay.

SCORE 94/100 CELLAR 6 years

Gralyn Estate Reserve shiraz 2011 ($120)

One of the smoothest and most stylish of any Gralyn shiraz yet released. It’s from a very good vintage which it has captured beautifully. Spicy perfumed notes on the nose show traces of cedar and satsuma plum characters. The palate is supported by fine grained oak and fine supple tannins. Still a very youthful wine with extended cellaring ahead of it.

SCORE 95/100 CELLAR 15 years

Gralyn Estate Reserve cabernet sauvignon 2011 ($120)

An immensely powerful and concentrated cabernet that has clearly been built with extended cellaring in mind. Deep blackcurrant and black olive characters on the nose with a leafy tobacco-like influence. The palate is wrapped tightly with some high-quality fine grained oak. This is a highly sophisticated multi-layered cabernet capturing the very best of the variety in an exceptional year.

SCORE 96/100 CELLAR 20 years

Gralyn Estate Classic Muscat ($55/375ml)

A very good example of this style of wine. Has developed a high degree of lusciousness with ripe caramel and honeyed dried fruits. Multi-layered and deep and concentrated with a warm palate-coating viscosity. Has started to show some classic muscat rancio which comes with extended ageing in old oak before bottling. Great to see the style.

SCORE 93/100 CELLAR 25+ years
