best drinking summer wine

Houghton White Classic 2015 ($15)

One of Australia’s most famous white wines. IT’s a blend but still largely chenin blanc. It’s fruit with such an appealing mouthfeel. Crunchy and vibrant in the mouth with impeccable balance. It’s idea for current drinking but really comes into its own with five years in the cellar.

Score: 91/100    Cellar: 6 years

Houghton Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 ($35)

Impeccable balance and poise in this classy cabernet from this very good vintage. Sweet ripe blackcurrant fruit balanced against the more edgy black olive character. Finely tune oak infusion and silky tannins for support. Very long almost angular feel in the mouth.

Score: 92/100     Cellar: 8 years

Houghton Crofters Shiraz 2014 ($20)

Another very good wine under this revitalized label. IT’s sourced from Frankland River where the quality of shiraz is pretty much always exceptional. A most elegant wine with fine chalky tannins and fine grained oak working through the cherry and typical Frankland blueberry characters. IT’s more medium bodied but with stacks of intensity driving through to the finish. Pretty smart for around $20.

Score: 93/100    Cellar: 6 years

Houghton Margaret River Chardonnay 2016 ($19)

A fruit-driven Margaret River chardonnay with just a faint touch of oak to balance the creamy lightly stone fruit influenced fruit. It’s persistent with a structured balance. Savoury and lemon notes combine to create a nice palate.

Score: 90/100    Cellar: 4 years

Houghton Wisdom Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 ($35)

This wine is sourced from Margaret River. IT is a wonderful expression of the region with its elegance and refinement. Such a perfect combination of fruit and oak. Leafy fruit with a slightly cedary oak character delivered with deliberate understatement. The palate though is chock full of sweet ripe fruit balanced against powdery fine tannins. Superbly sourced and crafted.

Score: 95/100    Cellar: 12 years

Houghton Jack Mann 2013 ($100)

This has to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Jack Mann yet made. Such soft and supple sweet fruit with perfectly weighted oak, which is now down to 50 per cent, and fine powdery tannins. Has such a fine precise structure and palate. Distinctive floral leafy aromas which seem to be synonymous with the vineyard. Lovely chalky mouth feel with those tannins providing beautiful supporting structure. Tremendous power and elegance which will see this wine cellar for 40 years without missing a beat.

Score: 98/100    Cellar: 30 years

Houghton Wisdom Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Perfumed leafy violet and red berry aromas stamp the bouquet as unmistakably Margaret River. This is so seamlessly structured with fine tannins and oak holding the beautiful fruit perfectly to a long finish. There’s deceptive power here delivered with rare finesse and style.

Houghton White Classic 2014

You’re not a sandgroper unless you’ve tasted this famous wine. Continues to deliver so much for so little. Lively fruit based on a Swan Valley staple of chenin blanc. It’s full of controlled tropical flavours with a crunchy mineral citrus lifted finish. Get some now and leave a bit in the cellar. It becomes something special with five years’ age.
SCORE 92/100 CELLAR 5 years

Houghton Margaret River chardonnay 2014

A most attractive and almost pretty young chardonnay. Highly lifted perfumed aromatics of nectarine and grapefruit with lovely roasted cashew characters. The palate is vibrant and lively with a fresh lingering acidity. Particularly impressive use of oak which adds
a creamy richness.
SCORE 91/100 CELLAR 4 years

Houghton Margaret River cabernet sauvignon 2013

Soft, generous and thoroughly delicious cabernet from Margaret River. Built on a deeply concentrated mass of blackcurrant fruit flavours. The tannins structure is excellent and sits comfortably within the wine supported by some high-quality, well-managed oak. Damn good wine for less than $20.
SCORE 92/100 CELLAR 6 years

Houghton Crofters shiraz 2013

Lots of succulent Frankland River fruit in this sumptuous shiraz that hits the mark at this price point. There is a distinct regional blueberry aroma with lighter aromatic cherry characters. On the palate the concentrated richness of plump shiraz takes over and swamps the oak to deliver a real mouthful of flavour.
SCORE 93/100 CELLAR 7 years

Houghton Jack Mann cabernet sauvignon 2012

Another stunning cabernet sourced from the famous Justin Vineyard of Frankland River. There have been some great Jack Manns but I don’t think any has displayed such elegance and poise combined with restrained control as this one. Within there is power and fruit concentration that builds relentlessly through the mid palate to a crashing finish. Will cellar for many years.
