best drinking summer wine

RAY JORDAN WINE GUIDE 2017

Mandoon Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2016 ($23.50)

Pure and pristine savvy sourced form Margaret River. There is a racy mouth feel here with crunchy citrus laced tropical fruit characters on the nose and palate. A little passionfruit pulp and a smidgeon of oak fermentation add to the overall complexity. Excellent wine for the short term.

Score: 91/100    Cellar: 3 years     BUY HERE

Mandoon Estate Verdelho 2015 ($22.50)

Scrumptious Verdelho displaying subtle tropical fruit characters that have been slightly muted with the extra year in bottle.  A little citrus, a little passionfruit and plenty if tropical flavours. Stacks up beautifully for current drinking but with the potential to age for a few years.

Score: 92/100     Cellar: 4 years     BUY HERE

Mandoon cabernet Merlot 2014 ($30.560)

The fruit for this excellent cabernet blend comes from the old Margaret River Research Station. Mature vines equal deep and concentrated fruit of impeccable balance. Intense and generous wine with tight controlling tannins and fine oak with a touch of graphite minerality holding the lines through to the finish.

Score: 91/100     Cellar: 7 years     BUY HERE

Mandoon Estate Old Vine Shiraz 2014 ($29.50)

These older vineyards date back to the mid-1950s and are now supplying some pretty handy plush plummy fruit towards this wine. The approach has been a gentle winemaking technique to preserve the essential soft fruit characters. Generous soft and supple palate with love oak and fruit balance. Like that minerally chalky tannin influence on the finish.

Score: 93/100     Cellar: 7 years     BUY HERE

Mandoon Reserve Shiraz 2011 ($49)

This super concentrated yet elegantly finished shiraz has been sourced from Frankland River. IT is a wonderful wine that has scored heavily at wine shows including winning the consumer choice award at the Qantas show last year. Lush and opulent with typical Frankland density and concentration plus that lovely blueberry flavour permeating the palate. So seamless and smooth, this is wonderful.

Score: 96/100      Cellar: 12 years     BUY HERE

Mandoon Estate Research Station Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 ($75)

This beautiful expression of Margaret River cabernet was wine of the show at the Qantas Wine Show last year. IT is a superb wine of balance, poise and style, yet with so much underlying power and drive. Everything is perfectly placed with the use of oak and management of tannins perfect. A terrific wine that will reward cellaring.

Score: 96/100    Cellar: 15 years     BUY HERE

Mandoon Estate Surveyors White 2015

A  blend of varieties that work in the Swan Valley. There’s semillon, chenin blanc, verdelho and vermentino. They come together to form a terrific current drinking white with oodles of appeal from the intensity of the nose through to the generosity but control of the palate. Little lift from the vermentino on the finish is rather cute.

Captures the essence of Margaret River with its blackcurrant and subtle black olive nuances plus a hint of fruitcake intensity. It’s from the old research station at Margaret River so it contains the fruit of really mature vines. Smooth, concentrated and powerful, this is the real deal. Great wine now or for the cellar.
