best drinking summer wine

Pinelli Breanna Rose 2016 ($16)

Such a beautifully fruity little rose. Yes, there is a little sweetness there but it’s so well balanced with the fine talcy acid that it finishes with a dry clean freshness. Red berry with a little Turkish delight and red cherry and raspberry make for interesting appealing drinking.

Score: 89/100    Cellar: 2 years

Pinelli Late Harvest 2016 ($16/375ml)

Fragrant and highly floral late picked style. Has a slightly muscatty character with a clean though quite sweet palate. The acid holds it from becoming cloying and the finish is really attractive. Ideal with fresh fruit or even some hard cheeses.

Score: 87/100    Cellar: drink now.

Pinelli Reserve verdelho 2015

A good illustration of a variety the Swan Valley does so well. Tropical fruit with a liberal squeeze of lemon juice giving it a bright lively lift. This is a terrific drink when it’s young but it can handle a few years of ageing to develop some delicious secondary characters.

Pinelli Reserve durif 2014

Can be a tricky variety to deal with because it has to be
pretty ripe to capture all those beautiful mulberry and
dark chocolate fruit characters. Well, this one works
perfectly. Yes, it’s deep and concentrated but delivered
with a classical Swan Valley softness and generosity. Love
the mouth feel and texture. A real quality young red wine
with some ageing potential.
