Upper Reach

best drinking summer wine

Upper Reach Verdelho 2016 ($20)

A burst of tropical fruit aromas greet the first sniff of this classic Swan Valley staple. The variety works so well and this is another beauty. The palate is chock full of sweet ripe fruit balanced with a crisp acid with the finish dry and persistent.

Score: 90/100    Cellar: 3 years

Upper Reach Semillon 2016 ($25)

This is a slightly less opulent and obvious wine to the previous vintage. IT still gets the 100 per cent new French oak fermentation, but the result this time is a more linear and tightly framed wine. Retains a delightful freshness with a few years in the cellar the best way to capture the real qualities of the wine.

Score: 92/100    Cellar: 6 years

Upper Reach Tempranillo 2015 ($30)

The fruit for this first rate tempranillo is sourced from the Chittering Valley. Has a lifted cherry and light raspberry character with a touch of savoury oak. The palate is medium bodied with a linear mouth feel of savoury dry tannins and subtle oak adding to the cherry and raspberry flavours of the fruit. Thoroughly enjoyable wine for the short term.

Upper Reach Reserve Shiraz 2014 ($38)

Dense and hugely concentrated expression of Swan Valley shiraz. Aromas of liqueur chocolate and savoury ripe plum with a trace of licorice. The palate is thick and dense with a rich dark chocolate and savoury plum flavour. Plenty of oak in support and the tannins are ripe and supportive. Slightly syrupy finish. Go with some hearty fare for this one.

Upper Reach Cabernet Sauvignon 23014 ($45)

This wine comes from Margaret River. Loaded with ripe and sweet blackcurrant fruit, some dark plum and a little liqueur orange rind-like character. Palate is dense and concentrated while the tannins are ripe. Neat oak infusion holds the line.

Upper Reach Reserve chardonnay 2014

Classy Swan Valley chardonnay demonstrating that good fruit and good winemaking makes good wine. Multilayered chardonnay more in the creamy ripe fig and stone
fruit spectrum but with a tight linear focus. It will appeal to a range of tastes and certainly if you want a little more richness in the mid palate then this one will fit the bill perfectly. Like the lemon curd and brioche characters.

Upper Reach Reserve shiraz 2012

Deep dark colour. This is a powerful shiraz from the intensity of the nose through to the driving depth and fruit concentration of the palate. It is still very young
but the spicy savoury fruit is just starting to show through. Oak and fruit balance is excellent and the fine chalky tannins and fine grained oak provide a smooth
velvety mouthfeel.

Upper Reach verdelho 2015

Consistently one of the best verdelho producers in the Swan Valley. Boy, this has a vibrant crunchy acidity with a mix of tropical fruits and a liberal squeeze of pulpy
passionfruit. Lovely palate with a clean and lively finish.Perhaps slightly leaner and more precise than previous wines which works really well.

A lush and fleshy blend from two varieties ideally suited to the Swan Valley. Red berry and rose petal aromas with a lick of cedary oak.
