Amato Vino

Amato Vino

From a small batch winery adjacent to Leeuwin Estate, Brad Wehr’s winemaking has evolved from his original retro pop-art label Wine by Brad. First came the evocative Mantra label, embracing classic Margaret River styles and Amato Vino – focusing on small batch artisan wines, emerging varieties, ‘lo-fi’ winemaking methods and unconventional vessels for fermentation and maturation. Always interesting, Wehr’s winemaking features both Margaret River and the Riverland region of South Australia.

Amato Vino teroldego 2014 ($40)

A really interesting variety that hails from north-east Italy. This is dark and lush with black fruits, chocolate and earthy spicy notes throughout. The tannins are quite ripe and sinewy, while the oak is lashed alongside to add some structure and further complexity. Really fruity with a savoury earthiness that carries the long palate.

Amato Vino nebbiolo 2014 ($40)

This is a single vineyard wine that’s been 20 per cent whole bunch fermented and left 24 days on skins. The result is that it has picked up beautifully ripe and integrated tannins with a textural completeness that is so necessary with this variety. Savoury and chocolaty with that savoury sinewy feel extended to the long finish. Excellent.

Mantra cabernet sauvignon 2013 ($30)

This excellent cabernet is sourced from a single vineyard in the Wallcliffe area. The striking feature is the balance achieved with the mix of new and old French oak married with the smooth medium weight fruit. It’s so smooth and velvety. Gamey with a meaty blackcurrant and dark chocolate character lifted with some leafy black olive nuances.

Brad sauvignon blanc semillon 2015 ($19)

This is a racy and fruity expression of the blend. Melon and passionfruit with an edgy citrus and pineapple character. The palate is clean and zesty with a persistent finish.
SCORE 89/100 CELLAR 3 years

Brad cabernet merlot 2013 ($19)

This is such a consistent value for money that always over delivers. Loads of blackcurrant aromas with a dusty chocolaty oak component. The palate is lush and plummy with oodles of generous flavours. Sinewy tannins with a little minerality add a defining touch to the finish.
