Deep Woods Estate

Deep Woods Estate was established in 1987 in the northern corner of the premium wine growing region of Margaret River. It is one of the most elevated vineyards in the region and enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Deep Woods Estate was acquired in 2005 by the Fogarty Wine Group, which also owns Millbrook Winery (Perth Hills) and Smithbrook Wines (Pemberton). Recent wines have been outstanding.

Deep Woods Ivory semillon sauvignon blanc 2015 ($14.95)

The remarkable thing for a wine under $15 is that this has taken a step forward from when tasted 12 months earlier. It is drinking like wines selling for a lot more. Consistently super value-for-money blend displaying loads of pleasing tropical fruit and an extravagant herbaceousness for balance. There’s a squeeze of lemon to add some zip and it all comes together beautifully as a precise current drink.

Deep Woods chardonnay 2015 ($20)

For a wine selling for $20 (and probably less in some instances) there’s some mighty good fruit and some serious winemaking on show here. Quite simply you don’t expect to get this level of sophistication at this price point. Wild yeast fermentation and 6 months on lees have produced a wine of depth and layered complexity with a lifted minerality on the finish. Lovely stuff.

Deep Woods Reserve cabernet sauvignon 2014 ($65)

Best of the West 2017 – Cabernet Sauvignon

These Reserve Deep Woods cabernets have been on the top shelf for some time now and this is another cracker that is as good as any produced so far. A striking feature is the balance and how well the oak tannin and fruit have come together into a powerful collective that effortlessly punches out to the long finish. The most elegant and stylish yet and a marvellous statement of what this part of Margaret River can do. Outstanding.

Deep Woods Harmony rosé 2015 ($14.95)

Beaut little rosé made from shiraz and tempranillo, 2 varieties ideally suited to this light and fresh drinking style. Plenty of cherry and red berry with a hint of fruit sweetness balanced by crisp acid. An extra year in bottle has added a slightly more savoury edge to it which is most appealing.

Deep Woods shiraz et al 2014 ($20)

A slightly different take on the GSM blend in that instead of mourvedre they have used malbec. It works a treat. Deep opaque colour. This is so generous and fruity with plenty of chocolaty toasty influences on the warm ripe fruit. It’s soft and supple with subtle structure in support. Touch of spice adds a neat lift to the finish.
