Galafrey Wines

Galafrey Wines is a family-owned boutique winery creating great wines from its dry-grown vineyard. Established in 1977 by one of the pioneers of the wine industry, the late Ian Tyrer, it is still in good hands with wife Linda and daughter Kim keeping up the tradition. Look out for the muller, it’s a beaut alternative variety. Excellent wines from a small maker now in its 40th year.

Galafrey muller thurgau 2016 ($20)

There is almost none of this distinctive variety planted in Australia. Yet every time I see it I am reminded of the late Ian Tyrer and his enthusiasm for it when he planted Galafrey all those years ago. Slightly tropical with a hint of spice and citrus. The palate is crisp and clean with a refreshing acidity. A faint hint of sweetness completes a nice little wine.

Galafrey Reserve chardonnay 2015 ($30)

A rich and flavoursome chardonnay with a peachy, creamy character that dominates the nose and then through onto the palate. Subtle toasty oak and some roast cashew and fig characters add some mid-palate depth. An ideal white wine with dishes having a bit of grunt and flavour in them.

Galafrey Reserve Riesling 2016 ($25)

These Riesling vines are getting mighty old now and I’m sure contribute to the intensity of fruit. Spicy and limey aromas are so typical of this region. The palate is so fine and precise with a crisp threading acid carrying a zesty appealing palate. This is all free-run juice so it has that crunchy vibrancy delivered by quality fruit.
SCORE 93/100 CELLAR 12 years

Galafrey shiraz 2014 ($30)

Excellent shiraz that comes off very old dry-grown vineyards. This is a deeply intense wine yet still with a degree of elegant restraint. Peppery and spicy notes on the nose with a lick of vanillin oak. The red fruit and dried earthiness of the palate make a compelling combination. Will certainly handle cellaring
SCORE 94/100 CELLAR 15 years

Galafrey cabernet sauvignon 2013 ($30)

One of the best cabernets yet from Galafrey. There is some classic Bordeaux cigar box and blackcurrant in here. So elegantly proportioned with firm but fine chalky tannins and some nice fine grained oak. A powerhouse off those old dry-grown vines.
