Great Southern

Great Southern

Home to Australia’s biggest wine region (and one of the biggest in the world), the Great Southern has a wonderful range of wineries reflecting an assortment of winemaking approaches.

The Great Southern is a diverse region split up into five subregions – Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker, Porongorup and Albany. Given the expansiveness of the region, the whole gamut of soil types and conditions are covered somewhere along the way, resulting in a broad and varied range of wines. As Western Australia’s coolest wine-growing region, the Great Southern’s climate provides ideal growing conditions for Riesling and pinot noir, both of which continue to improve year by year. Denmark is home to some of the most famous names in the Australian wine industry, many of whom have produced award-winning vintages, while Frankland River has gained recognition for producing impressive shiraz. A number of Great Southern wineries host their own tours and events regularly throughout the year, though the biggest celebration of the region’s fine produce, fine wine and community spirit takes the form of the annual Taste Great Southern festival. In recent years winemakers have started to push boundaries with interesting and emerging varieties and styles to complement the existing performers.
