Juniper, Margaret River

Juniper, Margaret River

Juniper Estate, originally known as Wrights, was established in 1973 and subsequently acquired by Roger Hill and Gillian Anderson. Since the acquisition, there has been further investment in the estate and two other properties purchased. The wines are of the highest order with the old vine cabernet and shiraz particularly outstanding.

Juniper Estate shiraz 2013 ($37)

Shiraz continues to be a super wine from Juniper. This follows the excellent 2012 and shows a slightly more robust character and structure. Remains that savoury earthy character with firmish sinewy tannins a feature. Really concentrated and dense with great length and palate persistence.

Juniper Estate chardonnay 2015 ($37.50)

Crunchy vibrant and so precise through the palate. This is quality chardonnay. Mealy grapefruit aromas with a little vanilla pod. The palate is complete and deep with a fine lingering thread of acidity sustaining it perfectly. Excellent wine

Juniper Estate Aquitaine Blanc 2014 ($33)

This excellent wine gets plenty of winery treatment. It’s pressed into barriques where it sits on lees for 10 months after natural fermentation. The result is exquisite with so much flavour and intensity. Lemony vanillin creaminess with a drizzle of lime to spruce it up. Sits so well in the mouth. Bracing closing finish.

Juniper Estate Single Vineyard malbec 2014 ($40)

One of the still small but emerging number of straight malbecs. I love it. This shows why malbec is such a marvellous variety that too often sits in the background supporting other high-profile varieties, most notably cabernet. It’s generous and floral with lovely plush tannins and rich subtle fruit flavours. Small production but worth finding down at the winery, one suspects.

Juniper Estate cabernet sauvignon 2012 ($70)

Shows all the marvellous virtues of Margaret River cabernet. Blackcurrant aromas with a little black olive and dark chocolate influences. There’s a grainy dusty earthiness on the palate which is clearly capturing a sense of the vineyard. Grainy and slightly sinewy ripe tannins with such concentrated fruit expression. Finishes with focus and length.
SCORE 95/100 CELLAR 20 years

Juniper Estate Aquitaine Rouge 2013 ($37.50)

This is a blend of most of the Bordeaux varieties. It’s a medium- to full-bodied wine with lovely expressions of fruit. Light and ethereal aromas of floral red berry and light cedary. Slightly lighter body than the straight estate cabernet, but with such beautiful finesse and poise. Excellent wine with some cellaring potential.
