Leeuwin Estate

Leeuwin Estate

One of the great estates of Margaret River with an international reputation for producing outstanding wines, particularly for its fabulous Art Series chardonnay. More recently, the reds are making a significant statement. Now under the direction of 2 generations of the founding family. The annual Leeuwin concert attracts world-class artists.

Leeuwin Estate Prelude chardonnay 2014 ($33.10)

One of the best Prelude chardonnays. Impressive mix of nougat and nectarine with a cutting edge of grapefruit and lemon zest. The palate is brilliantly integrated to focus it precisely to a very long finish. Such a bright and lively palate with beautiful fruit intensity. Excellent.

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Riesling 2015 ($23.20)

One of the most consistent wines in the Leeuwin portfolio. This is quite a fine and almost delicate Riesling and therefore one of the best. It’s almost a typical Margaret River Riesling with that limey minerality and fineness of palate. Crunchy and juicy with good tension and structure.

Leeuwin Estate Prelude Vineyards cabernet merlot 2012 ($29.80)

I’m sure the extra focus going into the Art Series reds is paying off, with even better fruit getting into the Prelude. This 2012 is one of the very best I have tasted. It’s delivered with a degree of restrain and elegant finesse while losing absolutely nothing in power and concentration. So well balanced with fully ripe tannins, a hit of oak and smooth leafy thoughtfully ripe fruit. Great value.

Leeuwin Estate Art Series chardonnay 2013 ($93)

This has to be one of the most understated and delightfully restrained and elegant of any Leeuwin chardonnay I can recall. It is also one of the very best. Everything has come together so perfectly with a mix of mealy creamy stone fruit, roasted cashew and that distinctive grapefruit. The power and lingering intensity is something else. A super wine.

Leeuwin Estate Art Series cabernet sauvignon 2012 ($74)

Such a beautifully elegant and refined cabernet but one that still packs some serious grunt. Displays some classic cabernet character with a nice leafy tobacco influence on the nose. There’s lots of red berry fruit with a trace of cedar. Dry ripe chalky and slightly sinewy tannins add to the structure which has just a little assertiveness about it. But hey, that’s cabernet.

Leeuwin Estate Art Series shiraz 2013 ($38.90)

Leeuwin’s shiraz has taken a giant leap forward since the variety was reinvented some years ago. This is a beauty. Rich and concentrated with layers of dark plum, spices and savoury oak characters all merging with a decent dollop of chocolate swirling throughout. The dusty chalky tannins add to the structure while the oak treatment is excellent.
