Moss Wood

Moss Wood

Moss Wood is a family-owned wine company and a pioneer of the Margaret River region. Planted in 1969, Moss Wood is an important founding estate of Margaret River. Clare and Keith Mugford, as viticulturalists, winemakers and proprietors, have been tending the vineyard and making wine at Moss Wood since 1984 and 1979, respectively. The Moss Wood and Mugford names are synonymous with uncompromising quality.

Moss Wood semillon 2015 ($38)

Best of the West 2017 – Semillon
Quite simply consistently one of the finest semillons produced in Australia. It comes from old Wilyabrup vines in the heart of Margaret River. Lemon and racy with a super intense and very long palate held with controlled precision. Lightly herbaceous but the fruit has a delicious purity.
SCORE 95/100 CELLAR 10 Years

Moss Wood chardonnay 2014 ($65)

One of the purest expressions of fruit from any recent Moss Wood chardonnay. Has a lovely brioche and vanillin creaminess on the nose with other savoury smoky characters overlaying the powerful fruit. The palate is complex and layered with a very long finish. Lovely richness and concentration.
SCORE 96/100 CELLAR 8 years

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale merlot 2013 ($60)

This vineyard has been producing some mighty fine merlot of recent years. This is medium bodied with a floral rose petal aroma that is immediately appealing and alluring. The palate is so fine and elegantly balanced with chalky tannins and fine grained oak set off against the sweet succulent fruit. A most stylish wine that will benefit from cellaring.
SCORE 93/100 CELLAR 10 years

Moss Wood Wilyabrup pinot noir 2014 ($60)

Shows that Margaret River can make some pretty nifty pinot noir. This is light bodied but with some sustained power and inner palate grunt. Fine bony tannins and acid with light cherry and light raspberry fruit nuances. Has a slightly chewy tannin character with quality oak in support. This is a stylish pinot offering plenty.
SCORE 92/100 CELLAR 8 years

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale cabernet sauvignon 2013 ($60)

Opens on the nose with a powerful chocolaty blackcurrant mix with neat dusty earthy undertones. The palate is rich and supple but with a core of firmish tannin and oak providing ample balance. The natural tannins of this vineyard have been held with restraint to create a very tidy wine.
SCORE 94/100 CELLAR 10 years

Moss Wood cabernet sauvignon 2013 ($125)

Continues the outstanding recent run of vintages for Moss Wood. This is without doubt one of the very best in this long and distinguished line. For a wine renowned for its elegance, this is one of the most elegant of them all. Yet the palate has such power and intensity. Bright and brilliant red hues. Beautiful sweet leafy fruit, silky fine powdery tannins and such perfectly weighted oak. Classic red berry and cassis. I think of some of the great older Moss Woods when I taste this gorgeous wine.
