Paul Conti Wines

Paul Conti Wines

Originally established in 1948 by Paul’s father, today Paul Conti Wines is still a family-run business with third-generation Jason Conti as winemaker. The estategrown vineyards are from tuart soils planted along Perth’s northern coastal strip. The Medici Ridge label sources fruit from small growers in WA’s south-west. New releases from the Miamup Road, Cowaramup vineyard in Margaret River add to the range.

Paul Conti Tuart Block chenin blanc 2016 ($18)

Best Value Producer of the Year
The Conti chenin is always a crowd pleaser. Loads of punchy vibrant fruit on the nose and the palate. Captures the flavours beautifully with a natural acidity that sustains the finish and brings the whole palate to life. Little squeeze of lemon on the finish is the trick to this beaut little wine.

Paul Conti chardonnay 2016 ($20)

A very young chardie at the time of tasting yet it had come together beautifully. It’s had a wave of oak over it but in the main this is fruit driven with plenty of creamy melon and slightly edgy lemon zest to balance. Lovely lick of acid on the finish. Best in the short term.

Paul Conti Roccella grenache shiraz 2014 ($18)

An attractive medium-bodied blend of grenache and shiraz. Supple fruit with fine grainy tannins support the smoothly textured fruit. Has a grainy, gravelly feel in the mouth with a dry finish that makes the whole thing such a good wine for food.

Paul Conti Mariginiup shiraz 2013 ($28)

Comes from the ever-diminishing soils of a vineyard that is succumbing to the urban sprawl. But it won’t give up without a fight as this excellent deep and rich shiraz demonstrates. Lavish dark plum and licorice notes on the nose with a little chocolate and mocha influence. The palate is a powerful statement with firm minerally tannins and neatly weighted oak.

Paul Conti Margaret River cabernet sauvignon 2014 ($22)

This is from Conti’s vines down at Margaret River. Given the quality of this fruit I have no doubt we’ll start to see some very good wines from this block. Love this one with its distinctly fruit-driven composition. Juicy and ripe with loads of appeal. A little dollop of malbec appears to have added that lick of juiciness and floral character on the finish. I reckon it’s moved up a notch in the past year.
