The Perth Hills region has long been admired for its idyllic rural setting just a 30-minute drive from the CBD. The landscape, which covers more than 100km and takes in the Darling Range from Chittering down to Serpentine, is an ideal destination for a short stay close to the state’s capital city.
A haven for nature lovers, the Perth Hills offers the best of both worlds with expansive views of the natural bush and lush forest, coupled with the towering buildings of Perth city sparkling in the night. A trip to the Perth Hills is a great way to take some time out and recharge, helped of course by the many local vineyards and idyllic picnic locations. The Bickley Carmel Harvest Festival is held in autumn and sees a range of producers offer up their wares as visitors roam through more than 15 participating venues. The region also has several artistic events and markets to stop at. The area is blessed with some fine laterite soil, which produces an outstanding selection of red wines and some surprising whites too. The best red wines to try here are cabernet sauvignon and shiraz, and there are some interesting whites such as viognier. The majority of the region’s producers are small scale or family owned and a visit to the cellar door is the only chance many will have to sample some of these hidden gems.
