Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Outstanding’

On May 15 2014 Cape Mentelle Cabernet was elevated to the ‘Outstanding’ classification on the sixth edition of the internationally regarded Langton’s Classification Guide. Langton’s Classification of Australian wine is the paramount form guide to Australia’s finest wines. It is based on reputation, and on track record at auction; the collector’s open forum for the trade of ultra-fine Australian wine.

The classic, age-worthy Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon, with its beautiful fragrance, purity of fruit, structure and vitality, has played a significant part in shaping Margaret River’s premium wine image. After winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy in successive years for the 1982 and 1983 vintages, it became a modern legend inspiring a whole generation of winemakers to succeed in their craft. The wine is derived from the wind-protected Wallcliffe Vineyard, The vines, mostly original plantings, are anchored in deep, gravelly, lateritic soils; a mixture of decomposed ironstone over gravel and clay subsoils. Sustainable farming practices based on organic principles are employed to ‘reduce our footprint and make the best expression of wine possible’.

After berry-sorting, light crushing and gentle vinification, each batch is gently basket-pressed into new (40 to 50%) and oneyear- old French oak for a maturation period of 16-18 months. Intense red and blackcurrant characters, fragrant violet/ dried herb notes and fine, sinewy tannins are hallmarks of the style. Further fruit complexity and richness develops with age. Under the watchful eye of winemaker Robert Mann, Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon is back on the ascendancy.

Wine Guide 2016

The cabernets from Cape Mentelle in recent years have reached a new plane of excellent. This is yet another that confirms the place of this producer among the greatest of the region. Leafy tobacco-like notes with such attractive perfumed fruits on the nose. The palate is so refined and elegant yet with deep concentrated intensity of fruit supported by chalky tannins and fine grained oak. Polished and refined through to its long finish. SCORE 97/100 CELLAR 15 years
