2011 was what we would call an early year. Whites ripened very early in the piece and were picked in quick succession. There was a two week delay before the reds from Margaret River came in but unlike the whites they were more evenly spread out in terms of picking schedules. Overall the whites are ripe and forward. They lack the herbal notes of cooler years. The Chardonnay and reds are standouts with great flavour and palate depth. Certainly Margaret River in 2011 will go down as the best vintage for any region in Australia. We had no rain and therefore no disease which destroyed most crops across the rest of Australia’s viticultural regions.
The Sandalford Estate vineyard in Margaret River is the largest and oldest vineyard in this famed region having been originally planted in 1970. The vineyard is located in the northern sub-region of Margaret River known as Wilyabrup. This sub-region is some 4 degrees Celsius warmer on average than the southern parts of Margaret River. This ensures optimal ripeness and generosity in the wines produced. The Chardonnay vines utilised to make this wine are genetically the renowned Gingin clone planted on the Estate in 1985. This clone is inherently low-yielding with added reduction in cropping from both the age of the vines and the lack of irrigation.
The old Gingin clone Chardonnay vines, were hand-picked in February 2011. These were then immediately transferred to a refrigerated container actually sitting in the vineyard next to the pickers. This allowed for instant cooling of the fruit. Only twenty half-tonne bins were picked. The fruit was then chilled down to 8 degrees Celsius prior to hand-tipping in to the winery tank press. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed with only the free-run juice being used for this ultra-premium style. After settling this juice overnight the cloudy supernatant was transferred to oak for full barrel fermentation in a temperature controlled cellar. At the end of fermentation the barrels were topped and sealed. After 8 months maturation the wine was removed from oak, stabilised in the traditional manner prior to clarification and bottling. Only 1498 six-packs were bottled with each bottle individually numbered.
8 months in 50% new Louis Latour French oak barriques and 50% one-year old Louis Latour barriques. Expensive and exclusive, when only the best will do.
A complex blend of gooseberries, vanilla and honey with citrus notes.
This is a stunning wine. The citrus and gooseberry notes seamlessly integrate with vanilla and roasted nuts from the oak. It is just early days for this wine, and will keep evolving in the bottle to show all that is just under the surface. The acid is well balanced, giving the wine a beautiful structure through to a cleansing finish. Serve cellar cool, 12 to 16˚C.

With most of the vines now 40 years old, it is no surprise that the quality of the wines is consistently excellent.”

“95/100. Plenty happening in here. Nutty roasted cashew, minerals and a sliver of grapefruit provide a glorious opening on the nose. On the palate the richness and intensity of Margaret River chardonnay becomes evident. Barrel fermentation and a combination of yeasts have created a sublime texture. A superb wine starting to drink beautifully now.”
The West Australian Wine Guide 2014, Ray Jordan, released October 2013, page 148.
“Hand-picked and whole bunch-pressed to a mix of new and used French oak for fermentation using different yeasts. The full straw-green colour is a little more developed than I would expect., but the palate is brilliantly fresh and lively, with pink grapefruit and white peach the main flavour contributors; cashew nuances from the oak are among the complexing factors, factors that will continue to influence the wine as it develops in bottle. Rating 95/100”

“WINE OF THE WEEK – Latest premium release from one of Margaret River’s leading wineries. Classic chardonnay that can either be cellared for up to 10 years or drunk today. I suggest the latter. It’s great. Rating 96/100.”

“Sandalford Wines have been adorning our tables since the 1840’s, and the combination of experience and innovation places today’s winery high on our list of reliable, premier local wines. During the last decade, both the whites and the reds have continued to improve several notches. We put this down to concerted energy going into the winery’s cooler climate Margaret River operations, where fruit quality is second to none on a global scale. Sandalford is able to draw on a range of grape varieties from the Swan Valley and Margaret River. But it’s the wines from down on the cape (Margaret River) that keep pulling in the accolades and the awards.”

“Sandalford Wines is a true institution in Western Australia. Established in Perth’s Swan Valley in 1840, there is a rich history to this pioneering company which was one of the first to recognise the potential in Margaret River, establishing a vineyard there in 1970.”
Mining Chronicle, Karl Franzen, June 2011, Page 35
“Sandalford has well and truly leapt into the big league of premium producers in WA, having now completely transformed itself to a Margaret River wine operation. The Estate Reserve and Margaret River Range are entirely from Margaret River.”

So much wine and so much to like in this outstanding chardonnay from these old Margaret River vines. Rich and intense toasty butterscotch characters on the nose and palate. There’s a hint of lemon rind and brioche with some savouriness that is balanced and appealing. A fuller style and one with so much to offer. CELLAR 8 years
