Wine Maker’s Note
2014 was a warm consistent year producing wines of balance, with a wet spring followed by warm dry conditions until February ripening the Merlot and Malbec to perfection. From March onwards the conditions cooled somewhat, and there was some rain in April which extending out the Cabernet Sauvignon harvest by up to 3 weeks.
Like all Woodlands wines, our Cabernet Merlot is produced solely from the Wilyabrup Valley, an area located in the heart of the Margaret River region that enjoys sandy loam soils, excellent drainage, and a moderate to warm climate.
This wine was picked in small batches from 28th of February to the 21st of May. Following harvest, the portions of this blend were sorted berry by berry on our vibrating sorting table. This process allows us to remove any leaves, stems, or green berries that can result in bitter or under ripe characters in the wine.
Once sorted, the fruit was crushed and fermented in small stainless steel fermenters. Once fermentation was complete, the wine was transferred into French oak barrels where it remained for 14 months.
Our 2014 Cabernet Merlot is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 6% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. The colour is an intense crimson. The nose is blooding and complex – showing dark berry fruits backed up with cassis, toast and French oak. The palate is dense and structured, with an array of ripe mulberry and blackcurrant characters. Upon opening the texture of the wine is very mineral, almost saline, with a bright finish. Over 30 minutes the wine opens up to be more supple, revealing more red berry fruit characters on the nose and palate.
A very structured wine, we believe our 2014 Cabernet Merlot will benefit from extended aging, and will be best enjoyed if cellared until at least 2019.

Wine Guide 2016
Another totally engaging young red from these guys. This is less opulent and more understated than some and yet such is the elegance that it presents with a great level of sophistication. Such poise and expression for a wine of this price. Leafy red fruits, a trace of black olive and cedary tobacco. A lot happening in there within such a poised and elegant palate. Gorgeous stuff. 11/03/2016 The Wine Advocate Reviews the Woodlands Range
The 2014 Cabernet Merlot shows expressive blueberry and warm cassis fruit, as well as cedar, yeast extract and Bovril plus a hint of chocolate. There is a lovely herbal lift to the intense fruit in the mouth, which is supported by firm grainy tannins and lively acid, finishing long and earthy.
