Xanadu Reserve chardonnay 2013 ($85)

All of the fruit was hand-picked and whole bunch pressed followed by 100% barrel fermentation in select French oak (approx. 35% new oak). Fermentation was allowed to occur naturally, with the wild yeasts responsible for the fermentation introducing more more complexity and personality into the wine. Barrels were lees stirred throughout a nine-month oak maturation period, without any malolactic fermentation. Only the best barrels were selected for the final blend which was put together in November 2013.

Wine Guide 2016

This stunning chardonnay comes from the old Lagan vineyard. Its low yielding vines produce fruit of extraordinary intensity and quality. All barrel fermented and whole bunch pressed with natural fermentation. Beautiful savoury notes on the nose with cereal and grapefruit complexity cuts with a precise minerally acid. Great wine. From the Lagan Vineyard at Wilyabrup, Gin Gin clone, hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, wild yeast fermented in French oak (35% new), lees-stirred during 9-month maturation, no mlf; a selection of the best barrels. This is the most complex of the '13 Xanadu Chardonnays, yet retains the hallmark precision and elegance of its siblings. Indeed, it half-succeeds in hiding its light under a bushel, for its extreme length can be missed if you rush from one to the other.
