Pemberley chardonnay 2015 ($30)

Mighty complex wine and it’s not hard to understand why when you find it gets 30 per cent new French oak after the five separate pickings over a number of weeks to achieve the optimum ripeness and fruit flavours. It’s creamy and textured with dense stone fruit and cream with a peachy character. It is all naturally fermented and gets pressed directly to oak. Very complete and intensely flavoured mouthfeel. Has slightly savoury smoky bacon character on the palate. The acid is crisp and there is impressive length.

Robert Bowen Pemberton pinot noir 2015 ($45)

Another exquisite pinot noir from Bowen. Exotic spicy notes over the sour cherry aromas with raspberry confectionery characters. The palate is still tight with a firm spine of fine tannins and a cloak of oak holding a precise line. Sweet fruits balanced with subtle foresty savoury characters. Excellent medium-body intensity and perfectly balanced.

Robert Bowen Swan Valley shiraz 2014 ($45)

This is from a number of vineyards, including some very old ones – about 70 years. Okay, it has a reasonable amount of alcohol, yet the fruity balance isn’t hot and shows beautiful varietal perfumed characters. Gets 30 per cent new American oak, with the rest older French. Bowen thought it needed some coconut American oak when he saw it fermented. It works for me. Has a slightly chalky character. Has some chewy tannin influences.

Robert Bowen Margaret River chardonnay 2015 ($60)

This comes from the Burnside vineyard, which is synonymous with wines of silky texture and power. This wonderful expression captures it perfectly. It’s 50 per cent new oak. Gets stirring until July and is on lees until December. There is richness and concentration which stamps this vineyard. A little cutting grapefruit and edgy mineral makes it so good. Very long in the mouth. Such a good wine.

Robert Bowen Mount Barker cabernet sauvignon 2014 ($50)

Such a refined and stylish cabernet from Mount Barker. It shows the suppleness of fruit from this region yet there is power and fruit concentration supported by firmish tannins and plenty of oak. The tannins have a decent grip in them. Quite a dry finish with that wet cement character you sometimes get in cabernet. Built with some extended cellaring in mind, yet it is easily drinkable now.
