Swinney Vineyards

The Swinney family has farmed in Frankland River for almost 100 years and established its first vineyard there in the 1990s. A major grape grower in the Great Southern area, they supply fruit to many of WA’s premium wine brands and select small parcels of high-quality fruit for their own eponymous label.

Emerging Talent

Swinney Tirra Lirra cabernet sauvignon tempranillo grenache 2014 ($33)

This is a stunning combination of cabernet sauvignon, tempranillo and grenache from a vineyard in Frankland, one of the best in the state. This wine already demonstrated a high degree of complexity on the nose especially, but it is the weight and balance on the palate that really stamp its quality. It is a great combination of characters with these three varieties. Just superb.

Swinney Tirra Lirra Riesling pinot gris gewurztraminer 2015 ($30)

This is a really interesting combination of varieties but one which makes perfect sense. The Riesling provides the linear strength, while the traminer brings a spicy lift to the nose. And then the gris adds some palate weight into the middle. It’s a high flavoursome wine with precision and length. I like it.

Swinney Tirra Lirra shiraz 2015 ($35)

Beautiful example of the slightly more modern style of shiraz being produced in Frankland River. The wine has finesse and refinement while losing nothing in fruit power and complexity. Spicy with a little savoury loamy characters on the palate. Grainy tannins and fine grained subtle oak complement. Impeccable balance throughout. Really impressive
