Small Producer of the Year

Talisman Riesling 2016 ($23)

Appealing crunchy and quite juicy blended white with a load of grassy tropical character on the nose and palate. A decent splash of lemon tang adds to the picture to create a wine ideal for summer drinking. Zippy fine acidity sustains the finish.

Talisman Gabrielle chardonnay 2014 ($37)

Oh boy, there’s lots happening in this significant watershed style for Talisman. Certainly the most complex and intriguing of any of these chardonnays yet released. The wild yeast influence is profound adding complexity and texture. Has a flinty struck match aroma with lightly toasty oak and edgy white peach and nectarine.

Talisman Barrique Fume sauvignon blanc 2015 ($27)

Terrific attempt at making this fume style of savvy. It’s been wild yeast fermented and then gets in old chardonnay barrels. The result is quite stunning. It takes the primary fruit characters out of the equation and instead you get more spices and winemaking influences, which work really well while still being underpinned by some excellent fruit intensity. Has a medium-term cellaring future.

Talisman merlot 2014 ($35)

Best of the West 2017
Merlot This is a breakthrough merlot for Talisman. It’s come from an excellent year and the use of three different clones. The result is a wine of extreme elegance and stylishness. Highly perfumed notes of red fruit and violet with a beautifully cedary oak infusion. The palate is a glorious combination that captures the variety with its refinement and poise. Super wine.

Talisman cabernet malbec 2012 ($25)

This is a pretty classy wine for this price. The floral red berry lift of the malbec plays an important part in the overall picture. The palate is refined and smoothly textured with a slightly gravelly mid-palate influence. Touch of tobacco leaf and cherry with some deeper chocolaty overtones. A pretty good wine.
