The Blackwood

The Blackwood

Plantings of more than 83 hectares over two vineyards make this the biggest grower in the region. The wines are consistent and provide both good value and top quality at the premium end with the reserve range a tribute to the colony’s first Governor James Stirling and his shipmate Sir Henry Blackwood.

The Blackwood Captain James cabernet 2014 ($50)

Ripe and delicious dark fruits dominate this rich and lavish expression of cabernet. There’s deep notes of liqueur chocolate and ripe blackberry with some gravelly loam influences emerging through the nose. The palate is so dense and opulent with those liqueur riches quite evident. Starting to drink rather well.

The Blackwood Sir Henry shiraz 2014 ($50)

Smooth and rich shiraz from The Blackwood. Crams so much deliciously opulent savoury plum and leathery fruit into the palate. There’s a fascinating gravelly dusty influence with traces of licorice, chocolate and coffee grinds. It all stacks up with so much deep power. A wine for extended cellaring.

The Blackwood Rushy Creek rosé 2016 ($15)

Racy light-bodied rosé-style with stacks of appealing strawberry and slightly confectionery raspberry characters. Clean and flavoursome with a lingering finish. Lovely light sweet fruit sensation balanced with a crisp fresh acid. Current drinking.
SCORE 89/100 CELLAR 2 years

The Blackwood El Toro Rojo tempranillo 2014 ($30)

This is a very drinkable red wine made from the famous Spanish variety. It’s soft and supple with fine tannins and understated oak. Smooth with a lovely texture. The fruit lingers with appealing flavours of cherry and earthy raspberry notes.
SCORE 89/100 CELLAR 4 years

The Blackwood Tweed River cabernet sauvignon 2014 ($15)

A distinctly fruit-driven cabernet displaying plenty of red berry and plummy characters. A splash of vanillin oak and supple soft tannins support the palate. Ideal as an early drinking wine.
