The Sum

The Sum is a new project by benchmark Great Southern producer Castelli Estate. The winery has now cast its net further afield, namely to Margaret River, to offer this new tier of wines. Melding the elegance of the Great Southern with the power, punch and lift of Margaret River, this new range offers some of the best drinking in its price point.

The Sum Riesling 2016 ($18)

A delightfully fragrant and pure Riesling exhibiting a mix of citrus and spice to create a deliciously appealing Riesling with texture and crispness in perfect balance. This delivers both value for money and excellent drinking with good flavour intensity a feature.
SCORE 89/100 CELLAR 5 years

The Sum shiraz 2013 ($18)

Medium-bodied smooth-talking slick shiraz made for current drinking. Has a plush soft palate structure with fine understated tannins and a little oak. It’s spicy with a liberal sprinkle of white pepper. Lovely mix of plum and mulberry add substance to the palate. Just starting to develop a hint of leathery development which adds another dimension.
SCORE 90/100 CELLAR 3 years

The Sum sauvignon blanc 2016 ($18)

A distinctly fruit-driven young savvy offering a mouthful of tropical fruits and plenty of citrus to lift. It’s clean and zesty with a subtle herbaceousness in the background. Zingy fresh finish.
SCORE 88/100 CELLAR Drink now

The Sum rosé 2015 ($18)

Most appealing rosé style. It’s light bodied but with good flavour intensity. Raspberry and subtle cherry characters dominate, while the crisp acid retains a freshness and palate zing for the finish. Quite textural, with a nice mouthfeel.
SCORE 89/100 CELLAR Drink now

The Sum pinot noir 2015 ($22)

Smart little pinot noir for this price. Displays those neat cherry aromas on the nose with some vanillin oak woven in. The palate is soft and medium bodied but there is good tannin strength through the middle and a cut of acidity that keeps it focused. Nice spicy finish. Good wine, this.
