Thompson Estate

Thompson Estate

Perth heart specialist Peter Thompson has taken a meticulous approach to the venture, which is not far from where another heart specialist, Tom Cullity, set up Vasse Felix in 1967. The original plantings of chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon are now in balance with their environment, and the mature vines are producing intense and elegant fruit. Recent plantings of burgundy chardonnay clones and new graftings of malbec will add further interest. One of the best of the new producers.

Thompson Estate semillon sauvignon blanc 2015 ($35)

Brilliant example of this style where the wine is partially fermented in older French oak to bring about a degree of richness and complexity. It works so well with the primary fruit characters still there but these additional tones making a huge difference. A most impressive wine

Thompson Estate Four Chambers shiraz 2014 ($20)

The best yet from this second label of Perth cardiologist Peter Thompson. Textured and fruity with deep and concentrated fruit characters. Lots of blackcurrant integrated with fine oak and firm tannins. Controlled and long in the mouth. Ideal in the medium term.

Thompson Estate Four Chambers cabernet shiraz 2014 ($20)

Luscious easy drinking style of cabernet blend. Ripe blackcurrant and dark plum on the nose works into the palate. Firmish tannins and loads of warm ripe fruit. Tannins provide a neat assertiveness to control the structure and drive the finish.

Thompson Estate cabernet merlot 2012 ($35)

A ripe and concentrated cabernet merlot blend with a little merlot and petit verdot. It’s well structured with oak and fine grained ripe tannins in support. The fruit is fleshy and flavoursome with a dry finish. A wine with some further cellaring ahead of it. Just starting to show some light leathery development but still plenty of time ahead.

Thompson Estate Andrea 2012 ($50)

This is a blend of largely cabernet sauvignon with about 10 per cent each of merlot and cabernet franc. The power of the cab sav is evident on the palate while the flesh of the merlot and the lifted aromatics of the perfumed cab franc play a key role in the completeness of the wine. Well structured with a firm core wrapped in flesh with a long focused finish.
