West Cape Howe Wines

West Cape Howe Wines

Consistently outstanding range of wines, West Cape Howe was established in 1997 and the first wines under the label were released in January 2000. The reds in particular are quite stunning. The cabernet sauvignon has already set a benchmark for this style, and the shiraz and cabernet merlot are among the best-value wines on the market.

West Cape Howe Riesling 2016 ($19)

Another excellent Riesling from these guys who have been nailing this variety for some years now. Bath salts and zesty lemon with a spicy minerality are features of a crisp and precise example of this favourite variety. Has a gorgeous mouthfeel carrying through to a long finish.

West Cape Howe semillon sauvignon blanc 2016 ($17)

This is simple, pure fruit-driven joy. Herbaceous notes on the nose with plenty of crisp fine fruit on the palate. A splash of lemon spruces it up, giving it a lively zippy finish. Ideal current drinking.

West Cape Howe tempranillo rosé 2016 ($17)

Tempranillo is such a good variety for rosé. It brings such beautiful strawberry and lifted floral notes to the nose. On the palate it delivers plenty of light red berry fruit flavours with keen spicy cherry subtlety. This finishes clean and dry.

West Cape Howe tempranillo 2015 ($20)

This excellent tempranillo is sourced from the Perth Hills and Frankland. These guys have made some very good wines with this variety. Fruity with savoury and slightly spicy edges. Tannins have a deal of grippy assertiveness, so food is mandatory.

West Cape Howe Book Ends cabernet sauvignon 2014 ($28)

Consistently one of my favourite modestly priced cabernets each year. This is another cracker which captures the character and style of Mount Barker cabernet perfectly. Lots of plum and blackcurrant fruit intensity with a little cedary savoury oak influence. Structured with firmish tannins and balanced oak.
