About Capel Vale

Capel Vale’s Wine Making Philosophy

While suiting a variety of consumers tastes and needs, Capel Vale wines reflect a winemaking philosophy of wines with balance, complexity and elegant fruit flavours that gives rise to wines demonstrating distinctive regional essence of the finest four cool climate wine regions in Western Australia.

A winemaking philosophy of wines with balance, complexity & elegant fruit flavours.

From the company’s creation in 1974 by Peter Pratten, to recent new and exciting developments guided by son Simon Pratten, Capel Vale has always been one of the leading family-owned and managed wineries in Western Australia. However, not content to rest on their laurels and determined to continue to capture the imagination and passion of today’s wine drinkers, Capel Vale set off on a brave new phase in July 2007 – with the launch of a refined and enhanced portfolio of 3 wine ranges, namely the Single Vineyard Series, Regional Series and Debut Series.

In 2015 our much loved Black Label Series is back to express an exalted selection of our best vintages and to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the family owned and operated winery.

Capel Vale Regional Series sauvignon blanc 2017 ($24.95)

This savvy is sourced from Pemberton, a region that is well suited to this variety. It’s very good. Muted tropical fruit with a spicy, slightly savoury character. It’s clean and pure on the nose and palate with a textured palate of good length.
SCORE 91/100 CELLAR 3 years

Capel Vale Whispering Hill Riesling 2017 ($32.95)

A crisp bone-dry Riesling from this outstanding vineyard in Mount Barker. Captures the Mount Barker mix of spices and citrus that is so distinctive. Fine minerally palate with a tangy crisp feel. Very nice wine
SCORE 92/100 CELLAR 6 Years

Capel Vale Regional Series chardonnay 2015 ($24.95)

Opens with a neat savoury minerally cashew aroma. A trace of citrus and some deeper stone fruit nuances emerge. The palate is balanced and dry with a keen savoury edge through to the finish
SCORE 90/100 CELLAR 5 years

Capel Vale Regional Series pinot rosé 2017 ($24.95)

Pale onion skin blush. The aromas of savoury dry pinot is in the modern idiom. The palate has a deliciously subtly sweet fruit middle, but the dry savoury finish is classic Provence. Made as a modern drinking food wine and it does it so well.
SCORE 91/100 CELLAR 2 years

Capel Vale Whispering Hill shiraz 2014 ($64.95)

Captures the qualities of the variety and this vineyard with its smooth flavoursome and quite poised delivery and fruit intensity. Savoury spicy notes of dark chocolate, plums and coffee grinds. The palate is generous with gravelly earthy nuances that merge so seamlessly into the richly textured fruit. A cracker.
SCORE 96/100 CELLAR 10 years

Capel Vale’s Wine Making Philosophy

As pioneers within the Western Australia wine industry, Capel Vale wears its feather with pride as the first family owned winery to identify and refine the viticultural potential in ALL the best cool climate regions in Western Australia. Mature vineyards are owned in Geographe, Mount Barker, Pemberton and Margaret River.

While suiting a variety of consumers tastes and needs, these individual wines reflect a winemaking philosophy of wines with balance, complexity and elegant fruit flavours that gives rise to wines demonstrating distinctive regional essence of the finest four cool climate wine regions in Western Australia.

In 1986, Peter Pratten as winemaker produced a Capel Vale Riesling which was named Australian National Dry White Champion. An historic moment in the history of not only Capel Vale but also of Riesling in Australia. Today, Capel Vale is still family owned and managed.

From July 2007, Simon Pratten took over as Chief Executive Officer from Peter and Elizabeth Pratten, however both are still heavily involved in the business. Capel Vale is a fully integrated wine business from vineyard to bottle.

Geographe

Along the coast of the Indian Ocean between Busselton and Perth, is a coastal limestone plain over which run a small number of rivers into the sea. Along the river banks are deposits of rich, red alluvial soil, approximately five metres deep, which lie over a limestone base. Capel Vale’s Stirling vineyard is situated on this terroir. This vineyard is trickle irrigated with pure, clean water with a guaranteed supply, supplemented by recycled treated water from the winery and bottling line.

The region enjoys a very mild climate with a strong Mediterranean influence. Summer days are generally warm but always end with a cool sea breeze that drops the temperature every afternoon. Rainfall occurs predominantly during the winter months.

“…the region enjoys a very mild climate with a strong Mediterranean influence.”

This region is particularly recognised for chardonnays and merlots with excellent mid-palate weight and concentration and shows great promise for some other varietals including Petit Verdot, Viognier, Verdelho, Tempranillo and Sangiovese.

The Geographe region while cool, has an earlier vintage and can support varieties that would not ripen in Mount Barker and Pemberton.
