About Credaro Family Estate

OUR STORY

THE CREDARO FAMILY ARE A PIONEERING FAMILY TO THE REGION, FIRST SETTLING IN MARGARET RIVER IN 1922 AFTER MIGRATING FROM NORTHERN ITALY. INITIALLY INVOLVED IN FARMING AND THE TIMBER INDUSTRY, SMALL PLOTS OF VINES WERE PLANTED TO PROVIDE THE FAMILY WITH TABLE WINE.

The Credaro family have a distinguished heritage in Western Australia as a pioneering family who settled in northern Margaret River in 1922. The family had humble beginnings within the agriculture and timber industries, building bridges for the first railways and major roads in the region.

Though it no longer exists today, it was a five acre vineyard that was established around 1915, near Commonage Road. He would work on this property whenever possible, between his farming and timber interests.

Cesare Credaro worked at the Meleri vineyard in Yallinup in the 1920s and 30s. Cesare, with the help of the family, took some cuttings from the Yallingup vineyard where he worked and planted an acre of the Italian Red Variety Fragola at Carbunup.

The family would make a parcel of wine every year for themselves and the neighbouring families. The Fragola has now evolved from site to site with each generation of the family over the years.

The family has been commercially involved in the wine industry since the 80’s, when their first plantings began supplying other established Margaret River wineries. Today the family manages 140 hectares of vines over seven separate vineyards across Margaret River, in the regions of Wilyabrup, Carbunup, Treeton, Yallingup and Wallcliffe. The Credaro family produce all of their own wines, in their 1200-tonne winery in Northern Margaret River, which was built in 2003.

VITICULTURIST

‘BEING A VIGNERON HAS BEEN A STRONG PART OF THE CREDARO FAMILY’S CULTURE OVER THE FOUR GENERATIONS AND ESPECIALLY SINCE 1988.’

Today the vineyards are managed by five of the family members; Robert, Matthew, Jason, Michael and Christopher. Robert Credaro has been the backbone to Credaro Wines over the past 27 years. He was part of the first commercial planting in 1988, with his father Albert and has grown the vineyard holdings from a modest 5 hectares at the inaugural Woolston Vineyard, to now 140 hectares across 7 vineyard sites in Margaret River.

Robert now has the help of his four son’s Matthew, Jason, Michael and Christopher. The four sons are part of the fourth generation and have grown up working in the wine industry. Together they have a long term goal to grow the Credaro brand to be one of the landmark wineries in the Margaret River Region in years to come by producing some of the finest examples of Margaret River’s best varieties Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Chief Winemaker

– Dave Johnson

‘… HAVING PEOPLE TAKE PLEASURE IN THEM IS SOMETHING HE CONTINUES TO ENJOY.’

The spark that set Dave on the path to winemaking began in Perth in 1996. After working a desk job in a bank for five years, Dave began studying horticulture two nights a week; with the view to getting out of the office and into the horticultural industry. A study unit on fruit trees and grapevines led to the revelation that the wine industry was the place for him. Margaret River was named as the destination and a sea-change of sorts occurred with Dave and his wife Kate moving “down south” in late 1998.

His first job in the wine industry was a year working in the vineyard at Moss Wood. It was here that his interest in wine began to evolve (inevitable, drinking 1996 Moss Wood Cabernet after a long day in the vineyard) and then in 2000, he began working at Juniper Estate. This position required Dave to work partly in the vineyard and partly in the winery. The winery grew its production over the five years Dave was there; requiring
that he eventually focus more on the winery rather than the vineyard. This led to his promotion to Assistant Winemaker and also led to the decision to pursue a Wine Science degree at Charles Sturt University to become a qualified winemaker.

OUR VINEYARDS

WOOLSTON VINEYARD – 42 HECTARES The original vineyard site in Carbunup, Woolston Vineyard was purchased from the government as crown land and then cleared by the family in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. The first plantings commenced in 1988, with a 4 hectare Cabernet Sauvignon block planting. Over the next decade the Credaro Family established themselves as key growers to several established Margaret River brands, growing the Woolston Vineyard to 42 hectares. Wine Making Process

Our Winemakers

TRENT KELLY CHIEF WINEMAKER

“OUR BRAND IS TO PAY HOMAGE TO THE HARD WORK OF PREVIOUS GENERATIONS”

Life in the wine industry for me started in 1999 working for Amberley Estate and Moss Brothers in the Margaret River region in the vineyard, with stints in the cellar during vintage. This strong interest in the industry was formed in 1995, when my parents built a holiday house in the Yallingup Hills. A number of iconic Margaret River wineries were a stone’s throw away. Foreseeing this as a lifestyle choice, viticulture was my chosen career.

In 2000, I started my university degree at Curtin University of Technology, initially studying viticulture but then moved to viticulture and winemaking in 2001, although viticulture was always the end goal. In 2002, I worked at D’Arenberg Wines in McLaren Vale and my love for winemaking superseded my need to tend vines. In short, my love affair with wine was born!

I held my first winemaking position in 2004. With this experience behind me I was lucky enough to be approached the work in Niagara Peninsula in Canada as an Assistant Winemaker for 2005 and 2006 in a newly formed and hugely successful producer mainly working with high end Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Upon my return back to Australia in 2007 I recommenced working in a leading Margaret River winery initially as a vintage Cellar Hand working up to Client Winemaker in 2008.
My desire to learn all things wine was still burning bright and I embarked on a 6 month journey in 2010 that lead me to Europe. Working in Languedoc in France and the Mosel region in Germany helped drive my winemaking to a new level. Return to Australia, my wife and I moved to Melbourne. I was lucky enough to spend 1 year under the guidance of Steve Flamsteed at Giants Steps in the Yarra Valley.

In 2011 I returned to Western Australia to take on a role as Winemaker at WA’s largest Contract crush facility. New ownership took over the winery in 2013, this lead to a promotion to Senior Winemaker. My desire to return to a premium branded focus producer lead to my movement to the Credaro team as winemaker in January 2016. In May 2017, I was promoted to Chief Winemaker.

Our brand is to pay homage to the hard work of previous generations, as Chief Winemaker my focus to ensure this is not forgotten but to grow that legacy for generations to come.
