About Drakesbrook Fine Wines

RAY JORDAN WINE GUIDE 2016

Drakesbrook Wines produces premium-quality wines in small amounts. The winery’s philosophy is to take each season as it comes and to produce the very best wines in small quantities. As a point of difference it has established a number of alternative and emerging varieties specifically selected to suit the warmer Mediterranean climate in the Peel region.

“Drakesbrook produces single-vineyard wines from the unique terroir of the Peel Region, Western Australia.”

Drakesbrook Wines is a family owned and run vineyard and winery in the Peel Region of Western Australia and is adjacent to the picturesque Lake Navarino dam in Waroona, located less than 2 hours from Perth.

In the mid 90’s Drakesbrook wine owner Bernie Worthington started to look seriously at taking his interest in wine growing and making to the next level after taking a lease with an option to purchase a property in the south west of WA.

When that transaction went awry, he began looking for another property in the well known Margaret River region of W.A.’s south west, although at this time, property prices in the district were skyrocketing.

Being a city based property specialist, Bernie reviewed his options and decided upon a fresh set of criteria. Proximity to the greater metropolitan area, aspect, good road access and accessibility for cellar door sales were very important.

Coming from a Pastoral station background in W.A.’s arid Gascoyne region where the annual rainfall of 200mm happened less often than it did, water was of critical importance.

It took over 4 years for Bernie to locate a property that may prove to be a contender in meeting his strict criteria; and in the meantime completed a four-year part time Associate Degree in Winegrowing course at Charles Sturt University at Wagga Wagga in rural New South Wales. From the knowledge gained here Bernie further specified his soil and climate requirements.

At about the same time he read Dr John Gladstones original ‘Wine Baron’ lecture, which had been delivered in 1990. From this article Bernie got the inspiration to look at other as yet less popular districts, which would be suitable for growing Mediterranean style wines.

In 1998, Bernie found “Drakesbrook”, a property, which had all the requirements he was looking for; here was excellent water supplies with the Drakesbrook River flowing through the land for about a kilometre, elevation with the highest point at about 265 meters above sea level, aspect with views to the coast and, well drained gravely loamy soils, all only just over two hour’s drive from the centre of Perth and adjacent to the established an popular Lake Navarino resort and ski lake tourist and recreation area.

Drakesbrook wines have been a labour of love and the realisation of a dream, Bernie hopes you enjoy his wines.
