About Juniper Estate

Juniper Estate is a producer of premium wines in Wilyabrup, the heart of the remote, environmentally pristine Margaret River winegrowing area lying in the south west corner of Australia about 270km south of the state capital, Perth. When the vineyard was planted in 1973 (under its original guise of Wright’s), it was one of only six Margaret River wine producers (along with Vasse Felix, Cape Mentelle, Cullen, Moss Wood and Woodlands); by contrast, today the region boasts in excess of 200 vineyards. No sub-region has been historically more important to the success of Margaret River than Wilyabrup, where the first vineyards were planted and wineries built and which continues to be home to a disproportionately large number of famous, usually small, vineyards.

Juniper was established by the late Roger Hill and his wife Gillian Anderson with the intention of producing wines which rank among the best to come from Wilyabrup and beyond. Wilyabrup has established itself since the late 1960s as the most successful sub-region of Margaret River, particularly for red wines; our reds are true to the style of the region, with minimal influence from the winery, and are further testament to Wilyabrup’s proven ability to produce wines of the highest quality.

Control of the winemaking process is critical in making premium wine, and Juniper has a state of the art winery and a temperature controlled barrel room built in 1999. The winery, with modern refrigeration and storage equipment, ensures optimum treatment of our fruit. We process in small batches which are treated separately, evaluated and blended – a truly boutique operation.

Our wines are made in the Margaret River style of depth and elegance, with careful use of oak providing added complexity.

Juniper Estate was planted by Henry and Maureen Wright in 1973 on Harmans Road South (now known as Tom Cullity Drive), in its picturesque setting along the Wilyabrup Creek. The vineyard grows on the ancient laterite gravelly loam soils that lie over a clay base. Typically the soil of the Wilyabrup region is deep and well drained, and has produced so many of the Margaret River wines which now command Australia-wide and international recognition.

The land has a rich history. In the 19th century the road from Busselton to the south ran through what is now the vineyard and forded the Wilyabrup Creek (hence the “Crossing” range of wines). It was then part of the group settlement scheme in the years between the World Wars. The present vineyard block was created by subdivision by the well-known Western Australian artist family, the Junipers, after whom it is now named.

The original Margaret River vineyards were planted without irrigation. Wright’s vineyard (as Juniper Estate was formerly known) was no exception and the original 21 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Semillon are dry grown. Dry land viticulture is highly regarded for the depth of flavour it produces in the grapes. The relative lack of water during the dry ripening months is thought to concentrate flavour into lower yields of intensely flavoured fruit. Characteristically yields average less than 3 tons / acre.

The Margaret River region is surrounded on three sides by the sea (marking the confluence of the Indian and Southern Oceans), delivering a moderate, Mediterranean climate to the area. We have sunny, dry, warm to hot summers, long mild autumns and cool wet winters. There is also the benefit of no frost and very little rain at vintage. The vineyard is hand-pruned and the grapes are hand-picked at harvest. Two acres of Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec were added in 1999, with the aim of extending the flavours of future Estate Cabernets. All the new plantings are also dry grown.

Juniper, Margaret River

Juniper Estate, originally known as Wrights, was established in 1973 and subsequently acquired by Roger Hill and Gillian Anderson. Since the acquisition, there has been further investment in the estate and two other properties purchased. The wines are of the highest order with the old vine cabernet and shiraz particularly outstanding.

Juniper Estate chardonnay 2016 ($40)

A marvelously elegant and stylish chardonnay. Beautiful fruit presentation is a feature on the palate. Oak has been well handled to add complexity and structure into the mix. Minerally acid with traces of brioche and butterscotch.
SCORE 93/100 CELLAR 7 Years

Juniper Estate Single Vineyard shiraz 2014 ($38)

This is a terrific example of classy Margaret River shiraz that has been sourced from now very mature old vines in the heart of the region. Perfumed notes with exotic spices float from the nose. A medium to full-bodied palate of such sublime elegance and integration. Fine grainy tannins, lightly toasty oak and a gravelly mouthfeel create such a beautifully poised palate.
SCORE 97/100 CELLAR 15 years

Juniper Estate cabernet sauvignon 2013 ($70)

One of the most stylish and elegant of Juniper’s cabernets. Beautifully poised and presented with perfect tannin and oak integration. Leafy blackcurrant fruit with a trace of savoury tobacco leaf infusion. Comes off old dry-grown vines that pump so much smooth intensity and concentration into the fruit. A wine with some longer-term cellaring potential.
SCORE 94/100 CELLAR 20 years

Juniper Estate Aquitaine Rouge 2014 ($38)

This is a delightful blend of the five Bordeaux red varieties showing a slightly different take on Margaret River. It’s quite a restrained and elegant style displaying such poise and refinement. The tried and tested combination of varieties works so well, while the chalky tannins and subtle use of oak harness things through to a sustained palate. Has a nice minerally precision on the finish.
