About Millbrook Winery

Over 150 Years of History

Millbrook is a boutique winery and restaurant in the historic town of Jarrahdale in Western Australia, 50 minutes south-east of Perth. The winery is located at the picturesque Chestnut Farm, a property that backs on to the Serpentine River and is nestled among jarrah forests, with stunning vistas of the rolling landscape.

The origins of Chestnut Farm date back to the 19th century, when the original owner, Joseph Batt, planted an orchard and the first grapevines in 1865, providing fruit to the local timber-millers in Jarrahdale.

L: Peter Fogarty, Chairman & Proprietor

A Family Affair

In 1996, Chestnut Farm and Millbrook Winery were bought by Peter and Lee Fogarty, marking the family’s first entry into the wine business. The Fogartys, together with their children John, Mark and Anna, planted the first vines, making the vineyard a true labour of love.

In 2001, construction of the state-of-the-art winery was completed. It is now a stunning home to a modern winemaking facility, barrel halls, a tasting room and a restaurant. Incorporating both local stone and timbers, Millbrook showcases the natural beauty and products of the L-R: Peter, Lee, Anna, Mark and John Fogarty

Millbrook Winery

The Fogarty family established the Perth Hills vineyard in 1996 and constructed a state-of-the-art winery with a cellar door and restaurant in 2001. The current range of wines consists of Barking Owl, Millbrook regional, Estate and Limited Release. Viognier and shiraz viognier are the benchmarks for the styles.

Millbrook Margaret River sauvignon blanc 2017 ($20)

This has been a sensational performer for Millbrook over the years with consistent show success. This one is right on the money again. Crunchy vibrant fruit flavours kept so bright as a result of early picking. A real burst of passionfruit and gooseberry strikes initially. The palate is tight and very long with a superb intensity
SCORE 94/100 CELLAR 3 Years

Millbrook Estate viognier 2017 ($40)

No mistaking the distinctive aromas of this variety. Apricot and gingery notes on the nose with a lift of orange rinds. The palate has a vibrant lift and has been deliberately crafted to keep it fresh and leaner. Midpalate creaminess is most appealing and the tanging lemon and orange zest on the finish completes a very good wine.

Millbrook Limited Release chardonnay 2015 ($45)

This is sourced from the Fogarty Group’s Smithbrook vineyard at Pemberton. Lovely smoky savoury characters on the nose with a subtle roasted cashew and white peach richness. There is a spicy balance in here complementing the vanillin grapefruit mix. Excellent wine.

Millbrook grenache shiraz mourvedre 2016 ($20.75)

From the first sip, I was hooked on this delicious Rhone blend. Vibrant and bursting with enticing fruit flavours with the three varieties working in perfect harmony. Each mouthful you get a burst of lively fruit. Great drinking in the short term while those primary fruit characters are so pronounced.
SCORE 93/100 CELLAR 6 years

Millbrook Estate shiraz viognier 2014 ($33.50)

Millbrook, along with Yalumba and Yering Station, has been a champion of viognier and this blend. Once again the guys have got it right with the dominance of the shiraz the striking feature, and the spicy aromatic viognier bringing some additional lift on the nose. Plump and fleshy with a driving finish. Great tannin management with length and persistence.
SCORE 95/100 CELLAR 5 years

Millbrook tempranillo 2016 ($22)

Sourced from fruit in the Geographe region which seems so well suited to this Spanish variety. A juicy and fleshy middle palate gives way to drier spicy and savoury character to carry through to the finish. That’s what makes this variety such a good food wine with so many different styles. Long and precise in the mouth.

An Immaculate Vineyard and Winery

With its majestic surrounds, the Millbrook property, which is home to one of the largest vineyards in the Perth Hills wine region, is truly rich in beauty. Chardonnay, Viognier, Petit Verdot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Nebbiolo are currently under vine in the 20-acre vineyard, and the winery has been specially designed for small-batch, quality wine production. The split-level construct is both compact and efficient, allowing the gravity transfer of juice and wine, and the winery’s temperature-controlled barrel halls mature the wines—in the finest French and American oak barrels—under optimum conditions.

To protect Millbrook’s pristine environment, modern and sustainable viticultural practices are utilised. Vines are planted on undulating slopes to optimise drainage and control growth, with the emphasis being on fruit quality, rather than yield. All pruning and picking is undertaken by hand, and the vines are irrigated only when required to ensure that fruit achieves optimal ripeness and flavour development.

The Millbrook Gardens

“There are kitchen gardens, and then there’s Millbrook Winery…”
Australian Gourmet Traveller 2017 Restaurant Guide

In addition to the vines lining the steep slopes, the Millbrook property incorporates an active orchard, an olive grove and a one-acre garden featuring over 100 varieties of heirloom vegetables, which are handpicked daily and feature prominently in the Millbrook restaurant’s magnificent seasonal menu.

Guy’s innovative menu changes frequently and is a constant reflection of what is abundant and at its best in the garden, guaranteeing the diner a truly unique experience.
