About Preveli Wines

Preveli Wines is a hand crafted, small family vineyard in Rosa Brook, within the Wallcliffe sub-region of Margaret River. It’s cellar door can be discovered in the coastal hamlet of Prevelly, where the Margaret River meets the Indian Ocean, extolled for its spectacular surf and rugged beaches.

Established in 1995 by the Home family which is third generation Margaret River bred, Preveli Wines has a vineyard in the Wallcliffe Sub-Region of Margaret River. The wines are all Estate grown from their vineyard using sustainable practices, located in the cool south-east of the Margaret River wine region with 28 acres, half under vine, amongst the pristine rural town of Rosabrook. Margaret River is surrounded by oceans on three sides of its Capes, this maritime influence providing a constant moderation of temperatures, creating ideal ripening conditions. The Southern Ocean influence brings welcome cooling during the warmth of summer and The Indian Ocean waters bring a warm Leeuwin Current during cooler evenings of Autumn, naturally regulating conditions during vintage.

Preveli takes its namesake from the village of Preveli on the Greek Island of Crete, in honour of the brave locals and monks that assisted the ANZACs during WWII. The Home family have their cellar door overlooking the Indian Ocean, on the land where the founder of the seaside hamlet of Prevelly commemorated those hospitable Hellenes.

Margaret River produces only 3% of Australia’s grapes but over 20% of it’s premium wines. Vines were planted strategically in 1967 after being identified as having a maritime climate similar to that of Bordeaux in France. Distinctive vine growing soils are weathered from an ancient land mass 2000 million years ago of decomposed granite into iron rich clay and laterite gravel loams. One of the most remote wine growing regions in the world with a natural beauty creating an inspiring, relaxed and creative spirit making it a bucket list tourism destination.

Preveli Wines are made under contract at the custom built small batch facility Fraser Gallop Estate by Chief Winemaker Clive Otto, who is one of Margaret River’s most awarded and respected winemakers with over 20 vintages crafted in Margaret River and is a recipient of Winestate Magazine’s ‘Winemaker of the Year’. Preveli Wines has the highest James Halliday rating of five stars ranking it as outstanding.

Preveli semillon sauvignon blanc 2016 ($23.95)

The extra year in bottle often changes these wines subtly for the better. This one has had the edges knocked off and the result is a wine still brimming with tropical grassy fruit characters, but with more refinement. Plenty of crunchy passionfruit and gooseberry with cut quince and lemon zest.

Preveli Wild Thing sauvignon blanc 2016 ($23.95)

I suppose the name gives it away that this is a little out there. It’s been fermented in new and used French oak using wild yeast. Notes of roasted almond on the nose with lemon stone fruit. Into the palate she really starts to work with deep-layered complexity already, yet still with a vibrancy and lively acidity. Just when you think you’re done a curl or two of lemon zest hits on the finish. Nice stuff

Preveli Wild Thing pinot noir rosé 2016 ($23.95)

Here’s the thing. I liked this as a fresh-faced youngster last year, but the extra year has taken it up a notch. The use of lees to add texture has contributed to its mouthfeel. It’s dry but with a sweet fruity character in the middle palate. Cherry and gamey characters with a note of raspberry. The palate is crisp and clean with a persistent finish that finishes dry. Ideal current drinking
