About Rosenthal Wines

Rosenthal Wines is a boutique winery located in Denmark on the south coast of Western Australia in the Great Southern wine region. The winery is owned and operated by the Eckersley and Ladwig families. Best mates and winemakers Luke Eckersley and Coby Ladwig have held the reins of Rosenthal Wines since 2012. The brand was originally established in 2001 by Dr John Rosenthal with a small vineyard holding in Manjimup with a focus on Shiraz and Cabernet. Since 2012 the boys have increased production and added several vineyards to the fruit resources as well as a range of wines. With over 35 years of winemaking experience between them, Luke and Coby hold a great insight into the West Australian wine industry.

The boys are inseparable and have developed a fantastic chemistry when it comes to blending and polishing the wines. They hold similar beliefs in that great wines must come from great grapes. They adopt a mix of traditional and new world winemaking practices to ensure they respect the grape and its own unique characteristics.

Rosenthal Wines are sourced from partner vineyards throughout the South West with a focus on identifying the best vineyard sites for each variety. The bigger reds (Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot) are grown in warmer inland areas of Frankland River, Boyup Brook and Mount Barker. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc which are early ripening varieties are grown in the cooler climate areas of Denmark and Pemberton while the Riesling grapes are grown in Mount Barker and Frankland River.

OUR STORY

Luke has gained many accolades since embarking on his winemaking career. Luke’s knowledge and insight into premium boutique vineyards in the Great Southern wine region has given Rosenthal Wines fantastic fruit resources to work with.

The first vintage of Rosenthal Wines at Rockcliffe was in 2009 and Coby has won numerous awards for wines he has made since then. Coby was recently named as a finalist in the Wine Society’s Young Winemaker of the Year Awards.

THE REGION

The Great Southern Wine region is home to many of Western Australia’s premier wineries. It is the largest wine region in WA and encompasses the five sub regions of Frankland River, Mount Barker, Porongorups, Albany and Denmark.

The Great southern wine region is blessed with a great diversity of climates and soils that enable a vast range of differing grape flavour profiles.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Luke believes a wine is born in the vineyard, in that its potential has already been predetermined by the time it reaches the winery.

Coby passionately believes that the cool climate of the region has the potential to make exceptional wines that can compete with the best in the world.

LUKE ECKERSLEY

Luke completed his Bachelor of Science in Oenology and Viticulture at Curtin University in 2002 and soon after travelled to Europe and the US to gain some international wine making experience.

He returned after three years of travel and worked in several Western Australian wineries gaining winemaking experience before taking a winemaker position at Forest Hill Winery. This was followed by a winemaking position at Rockcliffe for 4 years and now based as chief winemaker for Plantagenet Wines in Mount Barker. A role Luke has had since 2016.

Luke has gained many accolades since embarking on his winemaking career. Luke’s knowledge and insight into premium boutique vineyards in the Great Southern wine region has given Rosenthal Wines fantastic fruit resources to work with. Luke believes a wine is born in the vineyard, in that its potential has already been predetermined by the time it reaches the winery. It is his task, as winemaker, to understand this potential and then, from the fruit selected, craft a wine which allows this potential to be truly expressed.

COBY LADWIG

Coby Ladwig grew up in Denmark, Western Australia and was often seen as a youngster playing in the vineyards where his mother worked after school. This meant it was only a matter of time before Coby joined the wine industry. Following his graduation with Luke from Curtin University in 2002, he returned to his hometown with his sights set firmly on realising the potential of the Great Southern as a producer of outstanding wine.

Coby passionately believes that the cool climate of the region has the potential to make exceptional wines that can compete with the best in the world. He spent five years winemaking with West Cape Howe Wines before moving to Rockcliffe in 2007 where he was involved in designing and building the winery. 10 years later Coby now concentrates on the Rosenthal Wines brand which he and Luke took over in 2012. Coby is committed to the philosophy of identifying the best sites and sub-regions for each varietal to make exceptional single vineyard wines.

Coby was named as a finalist in the Wine Society’s Young Winemaker of the Year Awards and more recently as a Top 50 finalist for the Young Guns of Wine awards.

Rosenthal Richings chardonnay 2016 ($42)

Another very good chardonnay demonstrating the qualities of this excellent vineyard. Punchy aromas of nectarine and peach with a decent splicing of lemon zest. The palate delivers controlled stone fruit and butterscotch flavours with a shaving of roasted cashew. Lovely keen minerally acidity to finish.
SCORE 90/100 CELLAR 5 years

Rosenthal Richings shiraz 2015 ($42)

A robust shiraz from this now mature vineyard. Plump fleshy plummy fruit characters with lots of spice and delicious mulberry influences. Such a smooth and velvety palate with a fine integration of tannin and oak. The blue fruits seem to take over on the finish, with a little tannin focus sustaining.
SCORE 93/100 CELLAR 12 years

OUR WINES

Richings – The original Rosenthal vineyard was planted by Gerald and Marjorie Richings on the rich, loamy soils of their Springfield Park cattle stud. The Richings range is named in honour of the Richings family. Our Richings Chardonnay and Shiraz are made with only our most premium fruit, and are only made in years when we consider that fruit to be outstanding.

Marker Range – Originating in France, the practice of planting Roses at the end of vines was common. The reason being that Grape vines and Rose leaves are both prone to the same powdery mildew. As Roses are more susceptible than the grape vines, the mark of any mildew on its leaves was an early warning to viticulturists that disease is in the vineyard. While modern science has meant that disease can now be picked up much more quickly, Rosenthal’s “The Marker” pays homage to this quaint tradition.

Garten Series – The origins of the name Rosenthal mean a “person who came from an area where there was a valley of Roses”. Rosenthal is an affluent area in Germany, known for its beautiful gardens, with its coat of arms displaying a wheel surrounded by roses. Thus “Garten”, refers to a Garden of Roses. With strong symbolic ties to the Rose, our Garten label reflects these historical ties to this beautiful flora.

Rockfort Range – The Rockfort wines are a unique collection of wines that showcase Western Australia’s great diversity. They are carefully crafted from selected vineyards using traditional winemaking techniques and minimal intervention.
