About The Lake House Denmark

about

The Lake House Denmark is a cellar door, restaurant, cafe, vineyard, winery, function venue and gourmet food store located just 6kms from the town of Denmark in the Great Southern Region, Western Australia (approximately 50kms from the regional City of Albany and 420kms South of Perth). Established and opened by Garry Capelli and Leanne Rogers, The Lake House Denmark opened its doors in September 2006.

OUR REGION

The Great Southern Region is known for its natural environment – rugged coastline, white sandy beaches, tall timber forests, wildflowers and wineries. It is a great place to experience nature and a rural lifestyle.

The region is a great place to visit as it is home to some of the most visited attractions in Australia’s South West – the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk, Whale World, the National ANZAC Centre as well as the Great Southern Wine Region.

There are also many great places to stay in Denmark and Albany and all places in between.

OUR STORY

In April 2005 we moved to Denmark, Western Australia from Perth and our country lifestyle adventure started. After holidaying in Denmark for over 10 years we fell in love with the region and knew it was the place for us so we purchased a 91.2 acre property with a vineyard. We loved all things ‘country’ embracing everything there was to do from growing grapes, to starting a veggie garden and riding around on quad bikes.

Our first vintage was released in 2006 and our cellar door was opened. Located down a quaint country road on a picturesque lake we thought people would love to sit by the lake and enjoy a glass of our fabulous wine and of course they needed some food, so our vineyard platters and Vinofood were created.

Now ten years on our wine range has increased to now having four wine ranges with 22 wines. Our gourmet condiment range, Vinofood which utilizes the unique flavours of wine and grapes has grown and we have launched our pure and natural skincare products WineSpa. Our cellar door and restaurant is open 7 days per week from 10am to 5pm, only closed on Christmas Day and we have won numerous national awards for our wines, our food and our venue.

We look forward to sharing everything about The Lake House Denmark, our products, our philosophy and especially our lifestyle.

our philosophy

The cornerstone of The Lake House Denmark day to day, hour by hour business philosophy is to ensure we provide our customers the uplifting, connected and happy experience when they slow down and enjoy the good things of life and the magic of The Lake House Denmark.

Our philosophy has always been to inspire our customers, to provide a memorable experience every time someone visits our cellar door and restaurant, or sips our wines, tastes our Vinofood or uses our WineSpa products.

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

We wanted to open a business that would enrich people’s lives where life slows down and people tune into nature and connect with themselves and others. We are all social beings and enjoy interaction, connection and communication. These things nurture and inspire us, and when life slows down we have time to feel truly alive and loved.

We created a brand that reflects our sustainable ethical behavior and viticultural farming practices, personal integrity and authenticity. A brand that encapsulates the amazing journey from soil to bottle and paddock to plate.

We find fulfillment and meaning in our own lives when we research and develop our products and then see our customer’s enjoyment and satisfaction when they experience what The Lake House has to offer. This is ‘why’ we do what we do.

Wine, food and people are the core of what we do and the overall customer experience is our reward. We are passionate about educating our customers on what differentiates our full flavoured cool climate wines, our delicious Vinofoods and our nourishing WineSpa products.

A SENSE OF COMMUNITY

One of the great things about working and living at The Lake House Denmark is the variety of different people doing different things. Locals, interstate visitors and international traveler all meet here. Men and women in business attire, people relaxing, taking photos, parents playing with children, joking and having fun or simply enjoying a piece of chocolate cake. Couples deep in conversation, retired folks sipping a wine and lots of people taking time out having lunch by the lake.

CONNECTION

Home is normally our ‘first place’ of connection where we engage with others, and work our ‘second place’ of connection. Then there are special public spaces like The Lake House that are ‘third places’ to connect with others and re-connect with ourselves. From the very beginning The Lake House set out to provide an environment where people can connect and a sense of community can be experienced.

our team

Our team is the foundation of everything we do. They are the warm and friendly greeting you receive when you visit our cellar door and restaurant. They are the ones who process and pack every order, make sure the gardens and the vineyards are well-kept and that our food and products are of the highest quality.

GARRY CAPELLI, OWNER/MANAGING DIRECTOR/VIGNERON

With a background in architecture, marketing, design, business planning and development and leadership training, Garry left Perth in 2005 to live in the country (and go back to his country roots, he was born in Kalgoorlie) and start a new life and business adventure. Without any previous experience running a vineyard or making wine Garry set about learning all he could about the wine industry with the aim to produce high quality wines that capture the richness of the region.

Nowadays, Garry has a very active interest working with the viticulturists in the vineyard and the winemakers at the winery to ensure that only the highest quality wine is bottled for your drinking pleasure.

Garry is a big picture, strategic thinker and knows that it is easier to build a future if you have a jigsaw top to work with. With this knowledge Garry has been able to use his expertise and experience to build a successful business and a strong, well respected national wine brand.

LEANNE ROGERS, OWNER/CEO

Leanne joined Garry on his country adventure, and has had a very hands-on role in the growth of The Lake House Denmark. With a career in retail and finance Leanne used her skills plus her love of ‘making things’ to develop and evolve the business. Her passion for ‘doing everything’ has seen her work in all aspects of the business from hand-crushing fruit, spraying the vineyard with biodynamic preparations, running the cellar door and restaurant, as well as a ‘chef’ in the kitchen. She has also created and developed the recipes and look and feel of our Vinofood and WineSpa ranges.

As CEO, Leanne oversees the day-to-day operations of all aspects of the business, including the continued growth and development of The Lake House Denmark, Vinofood and WineSpa products.

CELLAR DOOR & RESTAURANT TEAM

Our friendly front of house team are the first people you will meet at our cellar door and restaurant. You can be assured of a warm greeting, customer focused service and knowledgeable and qualified wine tasting during your visit. Our team in the kitchen produce great dishes for you to enjoy whether you are here for lunch by the lake, coffee and cake or just a snack.

VINOFOOD TEAM

In the Vinofood kitchen there is always the sound of endless chatter and laughing. Everyday our Vinofood production team prep, cook, and bottle our wonderful and unique gourmet condiments that bring so much flavour to our food. Starting early in the morning the smells waft through the cellar door tempting all who visit.

WINESPA TEAM

Our WineSpa team look younger and younger every year. Imagine being able to work with essential oils and antioxidant and anti-aging creams all day! Our WineSpa team works on all the beautiful smells that make up our pure and natural skincare range, WineSpa.

VINEYARD TEAM

Working all hours of the day and night our guys (and girls) in the vineyard have just one focus – producing the most perfect fruit for our wines. Whether it is pruning the vineyard, harvesting the fruit, putting nets on or weed and pest control everything they do is all focused on vintage when we pick. Then the cycle starts all over again for another year.

MAINTENANCE & GARDEN TEAM

Our property wouldn’t look as good as it does at all times if it wasn’t for our maintenance and gardening team. From mowing the lawns, to weeding and pruning they look after all aspects of our grounds and gardens to make them beautiful in all seasons.

ADMINISTRATION & SUPPORT

Behind the scenes in the wine business there are a lot of numbers to run, schedules to plan, stock to control and manage as well as communicating with our sales channels and vineyard team. This is all handled by our administration and support team who organise everything and makes sure that we are steering in the right direction and that everything is running smoothly and efficiently.

SARI, WINE DOG

Our beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Sari is very much a people dog and loves to greet everyone that visits. You will often see her wandering around the gardens. Sari featured in Wine Dogs Australia 4 book and will also be the ‘September’ dog in the 2017 Wine Dogs Australia calendar.

PINOT, WINE CAT

Found in the Pinot Noir vineyard in 2007 our black cat, Pinot, was easily named. As she isn’t a real people cat you won’t get to see her at the cellar door as she only makes very rare appearances, but you can still catch her in the afternoons walking in the vineyard by the lake.

vineyards

With vineyards in Denmark, Mount Barker and Frankland River our attention to detail on every aspect of the grape-growing process ensures that we grow the highest quality fruit for our award winning wines.

GREAT SOUTHERN WINE REGION

Western Australia’s Great Southern Wine Region is Australia’s largest wine region comprising a rectangle 200 kilometers from east to west and 100 kilometers from north to south. It also has the coolest climate of all WA’s wine regions with some parts having a Mediterranean climate and other areas more of a maritime climate.

Comprising of five sub-regions – Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker, Porongurup and Albany – the sheer size of the Great Southern Wine Region means that there are significant variations of terroir and climate resulting in wines with distinct characteristics.

This diverse region is known for Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

DENMARK WINE REGION

The coastal sub-region of Denmark is home to The Lake House Denmark’s estate vineyard. Planted in 1996, the 6 hectare vineyard comprises of Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Denmark is a coastal town located on the Wilson Inlet and 423 km from Perth. The area was originally inhabited by the Noongar and they called the river and the inlet Kwoorabup, which means ‘place of the black wallaby’. The Denmark River was named in 1829 by naval ship’s surgeon Dr Thomas Braidwood Wilson after his mentor Dr Alexander Denmark. In 1895 the first timber mill was constructed and in 1897 a post office and savings bank were opened.

Tourism started when American soldiers, stationed in Albany during World War II made outings to Denmark. After the war Denmark became a popular holiday destination for Western Australians. By the 1960s Denmark became attractive to alternative lifestylers and early retirees with wine growers discovering the value of the rick karri loam for their vineyards. Riesling and Chardonnay were the first grapes grown in Denmark, with the first winery opening in 1976.

MOUNT BARKER WINE REGION

Situated on Albany Highway 350 km south of Perth with a population of approximately 2,76, Mount Barker was named after a nearby hill, which was previously named by Dr Thomas Braidwood Wilson after Captain Collet Barker.

Apple orchards were once the major industry in the region and thrived until the mid 1960s. Today viticulture, wheat, canola, plantation timber, sheep and cattle are the main industries around the area.

Located in the middle of the region Mount Barker has been described as ‘the birthplace of the Great Southern wine region’. While it is prone to the occasional spring frost its continental climate makes it perfect for varieties such as Riesling and Shiraz, however late vintage rains can cause issues.

FRANKLAND RIVER WINE REGION

Frankland is a small town in the Shire of Cranbrook (population approximately 380), situated approximately 360 km from Perth. The area was settled in 1857 after being named in 1829 by Dr Thomas Braidwood Wilson after Surveyor General, George Frankland. Originally settled by farming families following reports from explorers to the region and due to its good soils, consistent reliable rainfall, rivers and lakes, the land was cleared to make way for pastures and land for cropping.

Situated in the northwestern corner of the Great Southern region, with its western boundary touching the eastern side of Manjimup, Frankland River is the most northerly inland sub-region of the Great Southern. With dominant winter-spring rainfall it has a Mediterranean climate with greater continentality which favours varietals such as Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. A unique feature is a sea breeze which finds its way inland and cools the late afternoon.

Salinity in the soil and surface water makes irrigation difficult however with an extensive system of extremely long collection channels and drains on slopes plus holding dams and pumps it makes it possible to irrigate. Soils are derived mainly from granite or gneiss outcrops and are typically a rich red colour and uniform in depth.
