About Wills Domain

We have wine in our blood. Wills Domain is home to the Haunold family, father to son vignerons since 1383. Our heritage is Austrian and we now call 60 hectares in Western Australia’s renown Margaret River wine region home, and multi-generational family member Darren Haunold at the reins.

Our first vines were planted in 1985, and 16 years ago we established the Wills Domain brand. Since that time, Wills Domain has earned a reputation for providing some of the best wine and fine dining in the South West.

Wills Domain enjoys an enviable location situated in the Gunyulgup Valley, Yallingup, which is at the northern end of the Margaret River wine region. Our restaurant and cellar door overlook rolling vine-covered hills, valleys and paddocks with glimpses of the Indian Ocean – the perfect view for a laid-back long lunch or private event.

Wills Domain sits atop 60 hectares of rolling hills in the north of the Margaret River region in the Gunyulgup Valley. Our vines are planted on sun-drenched northern and western facing slopes overlook the Indian Ocean with a maritime climate perfect for growing wine grapes.

Our vines grow in ancient red gravel soils that are the envy of winemakers around Australia, and our state-of-the-art facility provides an ideal environment for our small parcel estate winemaking that combines old world tradition with new world know-how.

The Haunold Family produced its first Margaret River vintage in 2001. Winemaker Bruce Dukes has been making our award-winning wines since this time.

Our perfect climate and landscape combined with Ernie Lepidi’s exceptional vine husbandry skills creates a fruit which we harvest, ferment, mature and nurture to make clean, beautifully structured wines with a deep aromatic complexity and a long and satisfying palate.

We strive to achieve best practice in grape growing while Bruce acts as custodian of the wines as they evolve under his watchful eye.

The success of Wills Domain is thanks to the combined talent, experience and effort of Managing Director Darren Haunold, winemaker Bruce Dukes, vineyard manager Ernie Lepidi and the Wills Domain family.

Darren Haunold

Wills Domain is led by Darren Haunold, whose endless enthusiasm for the wine industry, passion for winemaking and entrepreneurial flair have seen Wills Domain grow from strength to strength each year. He characterises the brand and continues to inspire his hand-picked team.

Bruce approaches viticulture and winemaking with a holistic vision, striving to conduct the best environmentally sustainable practices in grape growing whilst acting as custodian of the wines.

Ernie Lepidi

Ernie has cared for our vines for more than 10 years of his 30-year career. His dedication and effort allow Wills Domain to reach consistently high qualities. Ernie’s tireless efforts rain, hail and shine allow Bruce to make wines which are real expressions of fruit grown in Yallingup and are true to Wills Domain sense of style.

Wills Domain

The wines of Wills Domain have been on a steep climb for some years and recent releases clearly point to the efforts being made in both the vineyard and winery to refine the ranges and elevate the standards which were already high. The new d’Elevage premium range is superb. The site was chosen for the maritime influence of the nearby Indian Ocean and Geographe Bay, aiming for wines with elegance and finesse. Great restaurant.

Wills Domain Block 2 semillon 2014 ($29)

There’s a pristine quality about semillon at its best and this tidy little wine shows that with such poise. Lemon waxy characters with a hint of grassiness. It’s light to the touch and long on the finish. Not a big wine, but one with persistence and insistence
SCORE 92/100 CELLAR 7 Years

Wills Domain Cuvee d’Elevage chardonnay 2015 ($60)

A precise and tightly-framed chardonnay displaying a wonderful linear palate line that carries so many characters through to its finish. There’s a chalky powdery character with lime and minerals. A trace of lightly roasted cashew completes the picture of an impressively defined wine.

Wills Domain Block 3 cabernet sauvignon 2013 ($36)

A slightly angular cabernet from this northern part of Margaret River that speaks lots about place. The tight tannins and subtle hint of graphite say cabernet, while the trace of black olive sits harmoniously in the ripe blackcurrant richness on the palate.

Wills Domain Cuvee d’Elevage cabernet sauvignon 2013 ($75)

If you like cabernet, you will love this. Aromas of graphite and leafy tobacco with plenty of varietal blackcurrant say cabernet, cabernet, cabernet. The smooth integration of the palate is a feature with the structure to support extended cellaring impressive.

Crams mountains of delicious goodies into its frame. Dark cherry, plum and spices with a liberal dollop of dark chocolate and cedar. Has that savoury sinewy character of the region with some dark fruits lurking in the background. Impressive example of Margs shiraz.
