Woodlands Wines

This picturesque little vineyard planted in 1973 opposite Metricup Road is one of the finest small producers in Australia, with the trio of founder David Watson and sons Stuart and Andrew producing a remarkable range of wines. The wines, especially the cabernets and cabernet blends, are consistently exceptional, reflecting both region and site. Worth going to the cellar door to check out some special limited release wines.

Woodlands chardonnay 2015 ($25)

The first thing I would say is that a wine of this quality selling for $25 has to be one of the bargains of the year. It is a hugely complex wine displaying excellent oak handling and such a delicate fine palate, but one with such deep layers of fruit working in harmony with the oak. Has a pristine fine palate that pierces through to a very long finish. Excellent.

Woodlands Chloe chardonnay 2015 ($90)

This super chardonnay has now well and truly joined the ranks of the very best in the region. This is stunning wine displaying some wonderful aromatics of savoury light stone fruit and pear. The palate shows the result of delicate handling and finesse, allowing the fruit to express itself beautifully. It’s so long and precise with incredible depth and power. The best Chloe yet.

Woodlands cabernet franc merlot 2015 ($25)

A beautifully fragrant wine based on the classic Right Bank Bordeaux varieties in combination. Has a spicy floral red berry nose with a trace of light cedar. So appealing. The palate is medium bodied and supremely elegant and stylish. Fine firmish tannins and a lick of oak hold the palate precisely. Has the fruit and the structure for a few more years. Another wine that clearly over delivers at this price.

Woodlands Margaret 2014 ($45)

A blend of cabernet sauvignon merlot and a small amount of malbec. Shows the distinctive Woodlands stamp of great oak use and fruit handling. There is a brightness and vitality about the wine which displays great structure and poise. Lifted floral notes on the nose and a palate that runs with intensity and purpose to a very long focused finish. There is a sweet fruit succulence in the middle palate balanced by those fine tannins.

Woodlands Benjamin cabernet sauvignon 2013 ($150)

Another outstanding cabernet from the guys at Woodlands. It’s largely cabernet sauvignon with a small addition of malbec and cabernet franc. Gets 21 months in new French oak which the powerful fruit needs to capture its best. Showing more fruit flesh and opulence than the tighter 2012 but as it breathes, the succulent deep concentrated fruit reveals more of itself. Great tannin and oak balance. A cracking wine.
